Apple previewed its Apple iPhone OS 3.0 software and announced the availability of a beta software release to registered developers. The Apple iPhone beta software release includes an updated Software Development Kit with over 1000 new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) including In-App Purchases; Peer-to-Peer connections; an app interface for accessories; access to the Apple iPod music library; a new Maps API and Push Notifications. “The new Apple iPhone operating software is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike. It will keep us years ahead of the competition,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

Transparent Language announced the release of its new Apple iPhone language learning application - Byki Irish. Available for download, the Byki Irish for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch app will be free on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). After St. Patrick’s Day, Byki Irish will cost $7.99 for the first 30 days as a special introductory price and $9.99 from then on. Byki Irish for iPhone comes with more than 1000 words and phrases, including some special vocabulary for St. Patrick’s Day, all taught through Byki’s rapid, 3-step learning process. Every word and phrase includes native speaker sound, and Byki Irish for iPhone includes the popular SlowSound function that allows users to slow down the audio to help perfect their pronunciation.

Shazam, the world’s leading mobile music discovery provider, announced its top rated mobile application is now available across Europe on the Android platform, following its successful launch in the UK and US markets in 2008. Shazam allows users to identify music by holding their mobile phone towards an unknown song and ‘tagging’ a track. Users can then go on to purchase tracks through the Amazon MP3 store, automatically access more information and become ‘friends’ with artists through their MySpace pages. Shazam was the third most popular application when the Android Marketplace launched, and since has generated more than 6,000 reviewers giving it a 4.5 star out of 5 star rating.

Downloaded over 240,000 times since announced in February, Nokia Maps 2.0 update has improved its optional Car Navigation, enhanced its pedestrian navigation, added multimedia city guides, now offers satellite images, and is sporting a redesigned user interface. Microsoft introduced two new products to help photographers manage their digital photos in a new way using location data, a process known as geotagging. Geotagging is an new way to organize your digital photos that was previously available only to those with technical expertise. Microsoft Software makes geotagging available for all photographers and can be downloaded for free at the Microsoft Website. Microsoft also released Expression Media 2, which is part of the Expression family of products for creative professionals. It's designed to help reduce the amount of time required by photographers to manage and organize large collections of photos and other digital media, and it includes geotagging functionality.
