ABI Research expects application downloads to reach five billion by 2014. That is an increase from an estimated 2.3 billion applications downloaded in 2009. The growing adoption of smartphones which saw sales rise 20% in 2009, as well as the proliferation of application stores, are the major drivers for this expansive surge. ABI Research expects revenue from mobile app sales to decline by 2013, as competition will lead to downward pressure on application prices, and a greater proportion of “must-have” applications will begin to face competition from free or advertising-supported substitutes. This has already started to happen, with the launch of Google’s free turn-by-turn navigation service.

Navigon AG, innovator in the navigation market, announce the availability of a free update for its North American version of the MobileNavigator for the iPhone. Is the end of Windows Mobile in sight? That would be quite a strong statement at the offset. However, when we look at the sales figures that Windows Mobile smartphones achieve compared to the competition, things do not seem to be looking up for Microsoft. According to research, market growth is about 13%, while smartphone sales figures with the Windows Mobile operating system have plummeted. There are at least 20% less smartphones with the Windows Mobile operating system the market, while this is obviously a growing market. This is a result that generally speaking would make any healthy entrepreneur undertake measures.
