Cheap Smartphones on their way

Smartphone prices are falling as shipment volumes increase, and a new study from ABI Research finds that while in 2007 only 18% of smartphones on offer cost under $200 retail price, that percentage has already grown to 27% this year. By 2014, say the firm’s forecasts, 45% of the smartphones shipped that year will be priced below $200. These numbers highlight a rapid change in many consumers’ attitudes about smartphones, and a corresponding shift in vendors’ and mobile operators’ sales and marketing strategies. Prices will hold at a certain point, we may never see a $30 smartphone. But over time, smartphones will take a substantial part of the mainstream handset market.

Low-Cost Handset market report

New research has shown how the mobile handset market is becoming increasingly polarised between low cost handsets for emerging markets and high-end smartphones for developed regions - with the mid-range handset market being squeezed. Low-cost handsets and Smartphones will together account for almost 79% of all new mobile phones by 2014, or just over 1 billion units in all. Operators and vendors are preparing to deal with a massive influx of new users from low-income socio-economic groups in developing markets and a rising demand for complex ‘smart’ devices from affluent users in developed markets.

ABI Research released a new in-depth market report. It reports that Entry-level cell phones enjoy 24% annual growth through 2014. The world’s largest underserved markets for mobile communications are in developing nations and regions. Asia, Africa, Latin America all have vast potential, but formidable barriers stand in the way. Among the most immediate: the low disposable income of most of the population. Low cost and ultra-low cost cell phones are seen as part of the solution to that problem, and according to a new study from ABI Research the two categories together will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24% over the next five years.

The impact of the global economic crisis will spread to the mobile phone market resulting in a downturn in shipments in 2009. According to IDC, total mobile phone volumes will be 1.9% lower in 2009 than 2008 levels, the first downturn in annual shipment volumes since 2001 when shipments declined 2.3%. Over the past several years, the mobile phone market has enjoyed double-digit annual growth due to an increased emphasis on emerging markets. However, emerging market growth has been steadily slowing as these markets mature. IDC now expects worldwide growth to be just 7.1% in 2008 before slipping into negative growth in 2009.

Up to a million unwary Christmas shoppers risk committing themselves to hundreds of pounds of payments for new mobile phones which will be obsolete within months. Although figures show that most people in the United Kingdom that want a mobile phone already own one, they remain one of the most popular Christmas presents - and anywhere up to a million will be bought in the UK in the run-up to Christmas. In particular this year, operators have promoted the idea of the 'mobile Internet', which means people can use their mobile to surf the web, download music, use Facebook, watch television programmes and make cheap mobile calls via the Internet.

The big surprise is that it didn’t unveil a phone - the putative “Google Phone” many had been expecting.

The mobile anti-malware market is emerging. Even though the threat level has increased significantly, the total number of attacks has remained low. The low threat level goes hand in hand with a low level of risk awareness; both in corporate and consumer segments, mobile crime is an issue that is not widely recognised. Yet, the mobile anti-malware market is poised to grow considerably within the medium- to long-term. Market drivers are the increasing sophistication of feature phones, the standardisation of smartphone operating systems, and the need for diversification in the cybercriminal industry.

Service providers will offer services to these devices in addition to handsets and laptops. SK Telecom is doing this today for Samsung’s HSDPA-enabled camera, and Sprint Nextel and Clearwire will heavily promote connectivity for a wide range of WiMAX-enabled consumer electronics devices.

As European deals for Apple's iPhone are announced, the chosen operators will be well advised to learn from the experiences of AT&T Wireless in the US when it comes to billing users, says Analysys the global advisers on telecoms, IT and media. The kick to mobile data usage given by the iPhone in the US market resulted in some subscribers receiving bills that were very large physically - in extreme cases running to hundreds of pages - detailing every mobile data event. AT&T quickly changed the way bills were provided - issuing summaries rather than full details by default - but the issue highlights the mismatch that often exists between users' requirements of bills and operators' perceptions of what users want.

Over the years, mobile handsets have developed from a simple communication device into a friendly multimedia electronic device. While traditional phones only required a basic receiver, transducer and microphone, today’s fully loaded handsets require racetrack receiver, dual stereo speakers, hands free, MP3 capability, microphone, vibrator, and some other accessories like headset and Bluetooth. As a result, handsets require a significant number of acoustic devices of smaller size with excellent sound quality to meet the demand of consumer. Annual shipments of music phones are growing at a faster rate than those of the broad handset market. In addition to the growing shipment of music phones, there is increase in demand for stereo sound.

Research and Markets has announced the addition of "Music Phone Wins But Mobile Music Loses in China" to their offering. Following three years of continuous strong growth, China's mobile music market slowed down in 2006 as a result of service provider (SP) regulation initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and mobile operators. However, even though the SP regulation has affected the mobile music market in the short-term, we believe it is positive for the continuous healthy development of the wireless value-added service market. We believe that the mobile music market will recover from SP regulation in 2007.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments grew a modest 11 percent year-over-year, to reach 258 million units in Q2 2007. Samsung overtook Motorola for the first time, to become the world’s second largest handset vendor. Neil Mawston, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics said, “Total global cell phone shipments have continued to slow down this year, but Samsung is speeding up. A combination of aggressive marketing and an attractive 3G device portfolio has driven Samsung into second position for the first time ever. Its 48 percent annual growth has come partly at the expense of Motorola, whose lackluster product portfolio across all tiers urgently needs refreshing.”

Those annoying “dropped” cellphone calls that have been largely attributed to atmospheric disturbances, high humidity and heavy vegetation may actually have a more celestial origin: A Queen’s-led team suggests instead that a large percentage are caused by solar activity. Investigating the mystery of communications satellite failures in the 1990s led Mathematics and Statistics professor David Thomson - then working at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ - to an unexpected discovery with implications for millions of cellphone users around the world. Both the satellites and the phones seemed to be affected by changes in solar gravity modes.

Wirefly, an online leader in one-stop comparison shopping for cell phones and wireless phone plans, today released an analysis of the recent sharp growth in smartphone sales and announced which smartphones are in the highest demand at the beginning of 2007. The sales of smartphones - phones with advanced, multi-functional operating systems - grew 70% from the third quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2007. This sharp increase in popularity in less than six months is attributed to two main factors: One, the public's awareness of smartphones generated by frequent national advertising programs; and two, increased choice for smartphones that are thinner, more stylish and have more compelling features such as music players.

Mobile video devices are the ultimate way to capture and share spontaneous moving moments. Mobile devices, unlike camcorders, are always with you, meaning you can not only record occasions like a wedding or a birthday party, but also capture fleeting moments like a great morning sunrise on the way to work or a baby’s first word. And mobile video not only allows you to catch these instants, you can also share them with the world as they happen. Nokia premiered video recording on mobile devices back in 2002 with the launch of the ground-breaking Nokia 3650 which could record up to 15 seconds of video. By 2004 and the Nokia 7610, mobile video functionality had reached 10 minutes.

As the energy source, batteries are one of the most important accessories for mobile phones. The Ni-Cd battery, which originated in the generation of black and white display mobile phones, is no longer available in the market. The NI-MH battery also has little demand nowadays. The colour display generation leads to wide application of Li-ion battery (Li-ion), which includes the lithium ion battery (LIB) and lithium ion polymer battery (LIP). As the most demanded battery, Li-ion covers 80% of the market share, while that of NI-MH battery only covers 20%. Moreover, the new generation of LIP is becoming more and more popular for its advantages and has a market share of 12%-14%.

Despite big advances in recording and playing capability on mobile phones, too many service-imposed barriers are retarding the uptake of music videos and audio, says the mobile content website. The Voeveo web site is the first website to create an interactive community for creators and buyers of mobile content to trade on-line. The site's solutions architect, Jeff Mitchell, said mobile phone technology was still running ahead of service provider competence on a global basis. "What this means is that mobile users continue to be starved of content choice, plus they are paying too much for low-grade offerings," he said.

To help mobile operators better manage their data traffic, Nokia is introducing a network solution that lets operators control the use of network resources by bandwidth hungry applications such as file sharing and Voice over IP telephony - giving operators the tools to maintain better control over their networks. The Nokia Peer-to-peer Traffic Control is the industry's first integrated solution to allow mobile operators to profitably manage the bandwidth available for peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic, and thus balance the allocation of network resources. The centralized solution is implemented as a software upgrade to the Nokia Flexi Intelligent Service Node and will be available during the first half of 2007.
