Nokia Lumia 800 review

The Nokia Lumia 800 is the first smartphone that emerged from the collaboration between Nokia and Microsoft. The Nokia Lumia 800 operates on the new Windows Phone Mango operating system. Previously, the now outdated 'Windows Mobile' was interesting for its synchronization possibilities. HTC Smartphone review

HTC Sensation Smartphone review - The first impression of the HTC Sensation smartphone is pretty good. The HTC smartphone is very similar to the HTC Desire, due to the rounded corners, except for a set of four touch keys on the bottom. The screen is large and next to power button and volume keys, a headset connection and a microUSB connection are found. I personally do not find the back very appealing, due to all the colors and stripes, but the HTC Smartphone is comfortable to handle. The HTC Smartphone boasts 7 main screens, in which the user can place several shortcuts and Widgets.

At the start of 2009, HTC brought the T-Mobile G1 onto the market, which was our first experience with the Google Android operating system. It took a little getting used to, but we quickly saw this platform’s potential. Other manufacturers followed quickly with different high-end mobile phones. LG is now introducing a model for the other end of the market: a prepaid package for a favorable price. Prepaid and Android do not seem the most logical combination, partly due to the use of data. Satmap GPS handheld review

Satmap launched its first product, the Active 10, at the end of 2007. The launch in itself was a good initiative, while there are not that many suppliers for this type of GPS devices, and it is always good to have a bit of a competition. Reading on the Internet about the Active 10, particularly at the time the business was just taking off, we find many complaints, partially correct and partially caused by the greater comfort other devices offer. Gradually through time, the tone of the comments has changed, although this did require several updates and a price cut.

On Wednesday, 19th of November, Sonim proudly presented its new partner concerning the product launch of a new rugged mobile phone. The brand is known for its great reliability, and introduces the phone in collaboration with car manufacturer Land Rover. During an event at Land Rover, which took place in Beesd, the Netherlands, Roy Vervenne, Sonim's General Manager in the Benelux, admitted to be very happy to have Land Rover as its partner. Especially while the car manufacturer Land Rover produces products which are extremely skilled, and are able to function under the very toughest of conditions. High resolution digital cameras are no longer an exception on mobile phones. It started a few years ago with an integrated VGA camera, which we thought to be very innovative at the time. Currently, however, there are phones on the market featuring an 8.0 or even 12.0 Megapixel camera. Yet the difference in quality does not go unnoticed. Whereas all the attention seems to go to the snapshot camera, the video capture function seems to have been pushed into the background a little bit. However, the Samsung HD now changes this, and actually emphasizes a HD video function.

With the arrival of the new version of Windows Mobile, Windows Mobile 6.5, HTC was the first to introduce smartphones using this new OS. The Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia uses special types of operating systems for the different categories of their mobile phones. Besides the standard S40 software, the smartphones run on Symbian; a well-known operating system which also goes by the name of S60. Symbian was developed by a joint venture between Nokia and several other phone manufacturers. At the beginning of 2008, Nokia bought out the other participants and became the sole shareholder, which implies Nokia wants to get more out of the Symbian system. The Nokia N86 smartphone has been available for a while now. The Nokia N86 features an 8 Megapixel sensor and a digital zoom function. The fact that there are only very few camera phones that feature an optical zoom, can be called remarkable. This undoubtedly has to do with the design of a new (internal) zoom lens and all the related hindrances that occur when integrating it into the phone whilst at the same time ensuring it doesn’t become too bulky.

Times may be hard for global economy, Samsung clearly doesn't care. Where many companies have gone into what I would almost call; 'sleep mode', Samsung seems to carry on at the same speed as they are used to. Samsung is the first manufacturer after HTC, to launch a mobile phone on the market, based on the Google Android operating system. With only a slight delay compared to HTC, Samsung is still the early bird. The bright AMOLED touchscreen monitor and the LED flash are unique features compared to previous Android mobile phones.

Garmin's slogan seems clear: 'Limitation shows the master." When I open the box, I can see a screen with solid plastic edges, with only one button and no antenna in sight. Furthermore, the content of the package is limited; it contains the device, a USB cable, a carabiner clip, a quick start guide and a manual in English.

The Nokia 5800 is often thought to be the first Nokia touchscreen mobile phone. HTC Touch HD review

Touchscreens come in a wide array of types and sizes. Naturally, they all serve the same purpose; to operate a mobile phone without using buttons and keys. Yet it is striking to see how they all have a different operation. The main difference is found in press-sensitive and warmth-sensitive touchscreens. Besides this difference, there are hard and soft touchscreens applied to mobile phones. The hard touchscreens, such as the ones integrated in the Samsung Pixon and the HTC Touch HD, don't require you to push hard, since their sensitivity is better. After a long silence, a new Motorola mobile phone was introduced; the Motorola ZN5 Motozine. This promising handset features a 5.0 Megapixel digital camera with special Kodak Imaging Technology. Garmin is treading new ground with the Colorado series. An updated appearance and a more structured amount of buttons. The monitor has gained a higher resolution whilst the Rock 'n Roller makes its appearance. Just as is the case with mobile phones, the handheld can be adjusted to our use via profiles and we can share data wireless. Sporty users can connect a cadans meter. For me, the main change is the introduction of Wherigo, an enhancement that is similar to geocaching yet offers a lot more than just searching for caches.

The Sansa View series is already the next generation of portable media players by SanDisk. Even at first sight, the SanDisk Sansa View looks sleek and neat; the device fits perfectly in my hand and has an expensive businesslike appearance. The SanDisk View is available in black. Samsung G810 mobile photography

Recently Samsung Netherlands introduced their latest mobile navigator. It is already quite interesting to walk around with this kind of mobile navigation system in your pocket, though it becomes even more interesting when it's combined with mobile photography. Although the new Samsung G810 mobile phone is not considered to be the successor to the Samsung G800, we do find its 5 Megapixel image sensor combined with a 3x optical zoom. This combination is similar to the features of last year’s standard compact camera as far as specifications on paper are concerned. How well mobile photography with the Samsung SGH-G810 does in practice, we will show through the following sample photos.

HTC Touch Diamond preview

The latest innovation of HTC; the HTC Touch Diamond was introduced during a press conference. This press conference was held in the media plaza at the 'Jaarbeurs' building in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The HTC Diamond is the first device based on Windows Mobile 6.1. There doesn't seem to be a vast difference between Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 though. The main differences are found in the battery's standby time which has been increased with 8% to 20% and the fact that it is possible to operate this mobile phone from a distance. In addition, the HTC Diamond features the new TouchFLO 3D technology. TouchFLO 3D is a farther developed version of the HTC TouchFLO technique which we have come across in the first HTC Touch.

During a Samsung press conference on a sunny day in The Netherlands, we were given the opportunity to shoot some sample photos with the Samsung U900 mobile phone (Also known as Samsung Soul). The press conference was held at the castle 'De Hooge Vuursche in Baarn. Despite the limited time we had to take the Samsung U900 on a stroll to shoot some sample photos, we were still able to get a good impression of the photo quality, the functions and the operation of the Samsung U900. The Samsung U900 main features are the innovative touchpad monitor, fast 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connection availability, a 5 Megapixel digital camera with auto focus, face detection and (electronic) image stabilization.

Cell phones are offering more functionalities every day. A growing crowd seems to consider calling less important than being able to use email, Internet, digital camera and navigation possibilities. The consumer seems mature enough now for the smartphone, or the multimedia computer as Nokia likes to refer to it, and for a good reason. The Nokia Communicator, the mother of all smartphones has had some transformation during the eleven years of its existence. The device was already years ahead to start with. Still it remained a device tailored to the needs of the business user. Moreover; the first devices were rather heavy as far as weight was concerned and they were not the cheapest ones you could lay your hands on.

Both types of devices not only differ physically but also as far as operation system is concerned. Nokia N82 review

Samsung S5 review

During the year 2007 Samsung have placed various YP-series music players on the market. And the in January 2007 introduced YP-K5 has already seen its successor; the YP-S5 multimedia player. The K5 was known as a light MP3 player with a so-called slider system and a touch screen. In our review about the K5 we called it ‘a very innovative MP3 player’. As always there were some issues that needed improvement such as the Samsung K5 not offering video play function. Packard Bell Eclipse review

The newest MP4 player of Packard Bell is the Eclipse. The Packard Bell is capable of playing audio files of MP3 and WMA (DRM) format. Samsung G800 review

With the introduction of the Samsung G600 in July 2007 everybody was convinced it would take a while for Samsung to introduce a new five Megapixel camera mobile. How could we get it so wrong, because at the end of October 2007 the Samsung G800 was already available for checking out at a Dutch dealer event. The SGH-G800 is unique in its class thanks to its three times optical zoom and face detection. According to Samsung the G800 has been equipped with a camera that can fully compete with a regular digital compact camera. LG Viewty review

A digital camera inside a cell phone is not exceptional these days. It becomes a different case when a 5 Megapixel digital camera is integrated in a mobile phone. And although there are more handsets equipped with a 5 Megapixel digital camera, for example the Nokia N82, Samsung G800 and the Sony Ericsson K850i, there is a vast difference in the quality of the camera. The KU990 is the first 5 Megapixel cell phone of LG. It looks like LG is starting to take mobile photography seriously. The LG Viewty is up to date with its large touchscreen, 5 Megapixel digital camera and multimedia player. We were able to test the LG Viewty extensively.

Shortly after having sent us the Sansa C250 and Sansa Shaker sent us the SanDisk Sansa Express for reviewing. Sansa Express is a USB format MP3 player supporting, among other things, WMA, WAV and MP3 format. The SanDisk Sansa Express features a dual-colour OLED monitor, weighs a mere 30 grams and is very compact with its dimensions of 79 x 25 x 17mm. The SanDisk Express MP3 player's sound is of acceptable quality. Using the Equalizer lets you fine-tune the sound to your personal preference which may change the acceptable quality to good quality.

The Samsung SGH-G800 is an ultra thin slider mobile phone and show off with a great design. The handset is one of Samsung’s top models and has to bring Samsung into the high resolution market for mobile phones. LetsGoDigital published their Casio Exilim EX-V7 review. To start with, the Casio EX-V7 is a slim camera, but most remarkably, it has an incredible zoom range for such a compact camera. During the Photokina 2006 Nokia presented the N95. This caused a lot of commotion in the mobile phone camera world. Now the multimedia giant is also available for testing, and we have made the first test shots. Judging by its specifications, the Nokia N95 does not currently have an equivalent. The Nokia N95 is everything that the N-series stands for, which is a real multimedia telephone. It has all you could imagine, such as GPS, an MP3 player, a video player or WLAN, you name it. In the next Nokia N95 test you can read if these functions all perform well, if they have any use, and if the built-in 5 Megapixel camera really is as good as Nokia wants us to believe.

HTC is a slowly but surely rising brand. The telephones they produce look professional, have a perfect hand fit and are stacked with handy Windows Mobile based functions. Also coming up lately are telephones equipped with a touch screen. On the one hand a touch screen is definitely a great surplus but on the other hand it is not handy when writing an SMS, MMS or an email. HTC has equipped the HTC Herald P4350 with the solution: sliding the telephone to open it, will give you an extended keyboard, small but useful. Recently I've noticed that the trend of making telephones increasingly minuscule has been slowing grinding down to halt. Telephones are getting bigger again and luckily, the number of functions is increasing along with the format. LCD Touch screens are becoming more common and a good MP3 player and digital camera are now ordinary extras that everyone takes for granted. When the HTC P3600 was introduced a while ago, it was ahead of its time. It is a candy bar phone with only a few keys on the bottom for taking and ending calls and operating and scrolling in the menu. The HTC Trinity P3600 also has a touch screen which can be operated with a pen and your finger.

In the year 1994 Henri Seydoux founded Parrot in Paris. Parrot's complete assortment consists of products that fully aim at the cell phone and Bluetooth market. They manufacture products such as loudspeakers you can connect to your cell phone or computer via Bluetooth and Bluetooth hands-free sets. Monitoring the Parrot assortment for a while we found out that their products have become more innovative and more beautiful in a short period of time. Recently a new Parrot product attracted my attention; a 7-inch digital photo frame that lets you transfer your pictures to the internal memory through Bluetooth. Parrot has been so kind as to send me a sample which gave me the opportunity of testing the Parrot Photo Viewer 7".

Samsung's designers know how to make an attractive device, and thanks to the Samsung K5 that came out quite recently we again acknowledge the designers' skill. At first, this modern MP3 player looks like an ordinary MP3 player, but if you take a closer look, you will see that it has no buttons. A quick look at the products they are currently launching is enough to tell us that Samsung is on the up and up. They know how to strike the right balance between style and elegance, user friendliness and innovation, to give products just that little extra. All this, is of course, a matter of personal taste. After the MP3 player had been fully charged and turned on, I got a pleasant surprise in the form of Madonna's new CD on the Samsung YP-K5.
