BlackBerry Torch review

I t has been some time since we have reviewed a BlackBerry smartphone, and since then a lot has changed. The enormous advance of BlackBerry on the consumer market and a few attractive new cell phones have done the brand good. Partly thanks to BlackBerry Messenger, or Pinging, BlackBerry is here to stay. Of course BlackBerry is more than that, it is a complete solution that is now accessible to many more companies thank to the introduction of the BES-Express software earlier this year. The new operating system BlackBerry OS6 is also very promising. However, the competition has also been busy, and the enormously popular Android operating system and the Apple iPhone do not make it easy for the BlackBerry product Research In Motion (RIM). This makes us extra curious about the user experiences of the new BlackBerry Torch.

First impression of the BlackBerry Torch 9800

The BlackBerry Torch 9800’s packaging is very small, and as always for BlackBerry, it is matte black. As soon as we open the packaging, the BlackBerry Torch is found in a special cut-away. The new BlackBerry cell phone has a very sleek design. We find about four buttons and an optical joystick underneath the touchscreen. When we slide the phone open, we also see a full QWERTY-keyboard next to the touchscreen. This keyboard is comparable to that of the Bold 9700 and it is a bit sunken down. The back is completely black with a BlackBerry logo, and on top, the lens with flash is found. The packaging also contains a data cable, a headset, a charger, a small CD with software and the instruction booklets. The first impression is positive, although the phone is a little big, especially when it is folded out.

BlackBerry Torch mobile phone menu

The BlackBerry menu has already been adjusted a few times, although they were mainly design adjustments, because old BlackBerry smartphones still ‘feel’ the same. Still, everything looks a lot better lately. About a year ago, the BlackBerry OS 5 was put on the phones, although the differences were minimal. Not much later, the Torch is equipped with the new BlackBerry OS 6. In the OS 6, multimedia and Social Networking play an important role, next to the standard BlackBerry Functions. If you push on the clock at the top, you get an overview of the settings related to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the cell phone network, so that they can be quickly adjusted. Just underneath of that, message indications and such are found. When you click on them, you get an overview of recent events and agenda items.
