LG Optimus review

A t the start of 2009, HTC brought the T-Mobile G1 onto the market, which was our first experience with the Android operating system. It took a little getting used to, but we quickly saw this platform’s potential, developed by Google. Other brands quickly followed with different models equipped with all kinds of functionalities. High-end phones have been introduced one by one, including the recent Samsung Galaxy S, setting a fine example. LG is now introducing a model for the other end of the market: a prepaid package for a favorable price. Prepaid and Android do not seem, partly due to the use of data, the most logical combination. Perhaps we are heading in a new direction. In any case, we are curious what this LG cell phone has to offer.

LG Optimus smartphone test

The LG Optimus Android’s packaging is simple and small. As soon as we open it, we immediately see the LG GT540 cell phone. It looks neat and tidy, completely silvery-gray with a brushed aluminum look. The back is very sleek, with a protrusion for the camera. If you look at the phone from the side, it is a bit oval. The front has a touchscreen with two touch keys and three regular keys underneath it. Next to the phone, we also find a data cable, a headset, a charger, and the instruction books in the package.

LG Optimus phone menu

In the menu you can choose from ‘Android Home’ and ‘LG Home’, so that you would expect to find the brand’s personal touch, but in LG home, only ‘applications’ appears above the menu and the menu key has been given a different design. That is too bad, as so many brands use the Android menu, making an own look & feel pretty important. The first LG Android smartphone had this a bit more, as the menu layout was very different. Now it is just a standard list of all the applications and sections arranged in alphabetical order.
