An active home screen appears upon activating the Nokia N97 Mini. Several shortcuts are integrated in the home screen, and besides these shortcuts, you can also add Widgets. This allows you to call your favorite contacts with just one click, or to view the latest weather forecast on your home screen. The keypad lock is a small slide button on the side of the phone. This is extremely handy, since it allows you to quickly lock or unlock the screen by one simple action.

The menu itself can be opened via the menu button below the screen. The menu button is not all that beautiful; there are small holes in it, and the lighting shows along the key. The original N97 on the other hand, contains a smooth and shiny key. Also the touchscreen of the Nokia N97 Mini has, as mentioned earlier, a simple finishing touch to it, yet when it is activated, you can see the backlight at the bottom. Although not that big a deal, it is still a bit of a shame. The menu consists of twelve icons. Inside the menu, we find the OVI-store and Nokia Maps. The touch screen responds nicely, although sometimes you do have to press firmly. If you press hard, spots will appear on the screen, which makes me suspect the screen is quite fragile.

M ultimedia is always at the heart of the N-series. There are three items found in the menu for multimedia, namely Music, Pictures and Videos. The pictures and music files are all neatly arranged. This allows you to search music by artist, album, genre and playlist. Pictures are stored in the same order they are captured in. The phone features two speakers, one on the top left and bottom left side. The sound is reasonable, only when the volume is turned up high, we miss the bass, as always. Video playback is also possible, although the phone only supports MPEG-4 and not DivX, unfortunately. The screen is great to view pictures on, and loading happens fairly quickly. However, you will notice that the 3.2-inch size of the screen is slightly smaller than average.
