T he specifications of the camera look good. In addition to high photo resolution, the Sony Ericsson W995 also features many picture functionalities such as BestPic and Smile Detection. The digital camera application starts by pressing the shortcut on the side of the phone, or via the menu by selecting camera. Starting up and focusing each takes about two seconds. The four-way key lets you quickly change between the captured pictures, camcorder and picture camera mode. The settings can be adjusted by the right selector key.

In the 'Settings' menu, the capture mode can be selected, the resolution adjusted and the effects chosen. The Face Detection and Smile Detection both work excellently. Faces are displayed in a frame and the picture is not take before a smile is actually detected. Changing the shooting mode, for example to Macro, requires a few actions. If the application is started again, it will remain in the most recently used mode and not return to auto. A small Macro mode icon is visible, however, I myself have unintentionally kept the camera in this mode.

8 megapixel picture quality
The quality of the pictures is all right, but we have to admit we expected more from a Sony-Ericsson camera phone. The colors are slightly pale and noise pops up too soon, especially in low light circumstances. The built-in flash seems to lack sufficient effective light output. If we compare this to the recently reviewed Nokia N86 with 8.0 Megapixels, the Nokia clearly beats the W995, while I actually expected more from the W995. What's nice is the BestPic option, where 3 pictures are made before and after taking the original pictures. Next, you can select the best picture, which is excellent for capturing moving objects, for example.
