Multimedia functions on the Sony W995

The Walkman Phones of Sony Ericsson's W-series are renowned for their excellent and effortless handling of multimedia files. The main menu contains the items Walkman and Media. The Media icon contains all of the media that is available on the phone. Media is divided into sub categories; Picture, Music, Video, Games and Webfeeds, which makes it easy to find what you're looking for. When inserting a memory card, it will automatically be searched and the content will be placed in the proper category. The Media application looks neat and well-structured, and additionally works fast and easy. If you select Walkman in the menu, you will gain access to the actual Music section of Media and the last song played.

Listen to music on your Sony-Ericsson W995

In addition to the standard Sony Ericsson connection, we also find a standard 3.5mm audio jack on the top side of the Sony Ericsson W995, so that any headset can be connected, and connection with an amplifier also belongs to the possibilities. The included headset is the In-ear version, however, if you don't use a headset, you can still listen to your music through the built-in speaker. The speaker is positioned on the bottom side of the phone and has an acceptable sound quality, although we do miss some 'depth' in the music; it all sounds somewhat shrill due to the lack of low tones. The included speaker set, type MS410 provides a much better sound. This speaker set makes music sound a lot better in addition to providing a higher volume. Although the set is light-weight, it is still a nice addition.

Sony Ericsson PlayNow Plus application

As we already mentioned earlier, the thing that makes the T-Mobile version of this Sony Ericsson W995 so unique, is the PlayNow Plus application. This application allows unlimited music downloads for a small monthly fee. Now this is real service for the music fan, and even upon purchasing the phone, it has 1000 tracks already preloaded on the phone's memory. The service works fast, searching and downloading is easy. It's only now and then you're trying to find a song that is not there. The new service definitely has a bright future ahead of it, while it is very innovative to be able to download a song directly via the phone. If you use the service on a frequent base, it's well worth the small fee you have to pay for it. Furthermore, the music can be played on three computers. If you were to send a song to another phone by Bluetooth, an alert pointing out the lack of rights will appear.

Recognizing music by TrackID

One application we recognize from earlier Sony Ericsson's phones is TrackID. TrackID will recognize music, ensuring that the seemingly ever-returning question of: "What was the name of that song again?" is now a thing of the past. The application works as follows: you're on a night out in a disco when you hear a nice song, you pick up your Sony Ericsson and activate TrackID, which will record a few seconds of the song. This data is then compared with a database, and within moments, both the artist and song title will appear on your phone. Next, you can immediately search for the song through PlayNow Plus. It's a good thing to have given a link to this already existing application.
