Nokia N86 review | Internet & GPS
Nokia N86 GPS navigation
GPS navigation with Nokia Maps
Nokia delivers the N86 with the OVI-store and Nokia Maps on a prominent basic spot in the main menu. The OVI-store provides ringtones, games, video files and various other applications. Both free as well as at a small fee. The online shop does not yet offer a great deal of choice, due to the fact it has only recently opened. The internal GPS antenna can be used in combination with the Nokia Maps application. By default, the most recent maps are taken from the internet real-time, just like Google Maps. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to purchase a license for full navigation including voice commands. This license is already standard included to try out for 10 days. Those who would like to be able to use the software afterwards, can purchase a license for one day, one month or one year. The licenses for entire Europe will then cost respectively € 1.80, € 7.99, and € 59.99.
Nokia N86 Internet feature
Internet Browser & Email application
The Internet browser standard included with the Symbian operating system, serves well for showing almost any website. However, there is no standard flash support. This means a severe amount of scrolling with the arrow keys on very large websites, and it has to be said the screen is slightly on the small side, also to enter a web address, you have to use the standard keypad. On these points, the Nokia N86 really is surpassed by competing, more enhanced smartphones with full touchscreen and/or full QWERTY keyboard. Mobile web sites like Google, MySpace and MSN are still very well manageable. And also the e-mail application works properly, so you will always stay up-to-date when it comes to your Email traffic, although also here you do miss a full keyboard.
Nokia N86 Memory
Expandable memory of the multimedia phone
A genuine multimedia phone, should not lack memory. Pictures with a size between 1 and 2MB, some nice music CDs, a number of movies and a few nice applications. All of this calls for sufficient memory. The Nokia N86 standard features an internal memory of 8GB. Should this not be enough, then you can opt to enhance the 8GB with a 16GB micro SD/SDHC memory card. This card has to be inserted on the side of the phone, underneath the battery cover, which lets you change the card without having to remove the battery.
Nokia N86 battery
Nokia N86 Standby time
The 3.7V 1200mAh Lithium Ion battery BL-5K included with the Nokia N86, provides a maximum standby time of 315 hours and a maximum of 6 hours call-time. I frequently used the Internet, music applications, digital camera and call function while testing, and still the battery often lasted two to three days. This is excellent; its use is certainly above average.
