Personalizing start screen

The menu contains all the icons for various functionalities and programs. If an extra application is installed, it will automatically appear in the menu. Since everything is appropriately placed together, you won't lose too much time searching. Unless of course you have installed many applications, which will then all appear in the menu, making it look somewhat crowded. Finding the correct application will then take more time. It's easy to make a shortcut to an item in the main menu; just keep pressing the proper icon and you will end up on one of the start screens. Next, you have to determine your position, and as soon as you take your finger off the screen, the shortcut is created. Adjustments can be made very simply by just pressing a random shortcut and moving it to the recycle bin.

In addition to taking still pictures, the Samsung Galaxy also provides the option to capture videos with its integrated 5 megapixel digital camera. A hardware camera button is available, which makes shooting just that little bit more effortless. Naturally, also the touchscreen can be used in addition to the camera button. The camera application is activated by using the camera function in the menu or by pressing the shortcut briefly. Upon starting the camera, the screen remains black, causing a delay of approximately three seconds before shooting is possible.

When the digital camera application is started, the entire screen functions as a viewfinder, while the shutter release and a thumbnail of the last picture are displayed. Focus takes some time too, but not without a good result. The pictures look excellent on the bright AMOLED screen. The camera allows for taking pictures up close as well as from a distance without having to adjust settings, the autofocus automatically selects the best setting. We soon found out that neither these settings nor other settings can be adjusted. The only thing we can select is to add a location to a picture (geo-tagging) and the flash settings. Whereas Samsung usually offers a wide range of camera application settings, for the Samsung Galaxy this turns out rather disappointing.

In general, the digital camera functionality is acceptable; the camera is not fast when it comes to starting up and taking a picture, however, as soon as the picture is displayed on the screen, it seems to be of good quality. If you watch the pictures afterwards on a computer, they prove reasonable. They are not bad, but could still be improved. The colors are less harsh than what you see on your phone at first, and in case the light circumstances were only so-so when shooting; noise is clearly visible. The flash does enable reasonable pictures in low light. Just keep the effective range of the small flash in mind.
