Android Market
The main menu also contains the Android Market. The Android Market is a sort of online store where the users can find many games and applications. This is a similar structure to that of the Apple AppStore. In the Android store, both free and paid applications are available. Thanks to this Android Market, you can always add something new to your phone, since new content is continuously available. Currently, the offer is already quite reasonable. A few examples of funny and handy applications are: a task manager that also lets you close programs, a ruler which makes use of the track ball, a level, several news and weather applications and, of course, a wide range of games.

Download GPS navigation via Android Market
Thanks to the built-in GPS antenna, it is easy to determine your location and plan your route with the HTC Hero. The Google Maps application is standard installed and works well together with the GPS. Positioning happens quite fast, thanks to the A-GPS support. This way, the network is also used to determine the location roughly, with a circle around the position which becomes smaller as the position becomes more accurate. The aforementioned Android Market also offers navigation solutions, also without an extra fee. These are not very extensive, however, they do function as a full voice navigation system, whereas Google Maps only displays positions and instructions on the screen. It is just a matter of waiting for professional navigation solutions.
HTC Hero Multimedia
Multimedia features on the HTC smartphone
The new Android Widget ensures you will always have your favorite music at hand on one of the eight main screens. The music player is neat and, above all, very well-organized. Upon opening a music file, you can choose for options, which makes a bar appear at the bottom of the screen, reminding us very much of the TouchFlo of HTC. The bar allows you to select albums, playlists, genre, artist and purchased music. Thanks to this enhanced music player, you can enjoy your music everywhere and at all times. The built-in speaker is quite nice, the maximum volume is reasonable, although it all sounds rather harsh in that case, mainly due to the lack of low tones. Naturally, you can also use the included headset or any other 3.5 mm headset for that matter. That really is a plus, since this connection is placed on the top side.
HTC Hero Internet browser
Microsoft ActiveSync for all email
The Internet browser effortlessly displays all pages, even flash websites. Thanks to the Multi-touch touchscreen, you can zoom in by moving two fingers apart. This also makes the normal, not specific mobile websites fully accessible. Regarding email, it allows a quick setup. The Microsoft ActiveSync allows for automatic upload of all email accounts, contacts and calendar items. A special G-mail application is also available, although other email addresses can also be added; often only requiring the username and password. The settings will be retrieved online. A Google Account allows you to not only manage your mail, but also directly synchronize your contacts and calendar. Everything you change or add on the phone, will also be updated online in order to always have a backup and quick access to all your data.
HTC Hero battery
HTC smartphone standby time
HTC delivers the Hero with a 3.7V 1350mAh Lithium Ion battery. This standard battery reaches a maximum of 8 hours of talk-time, and a maximum standby time of 440 hours. During the test period, the standby time proved to be reasonable. I used many applications, constantly checked email, and made quite a few calls, and still the battery lasted for more than one day. If not making quite so much use of the phone, the phone will last for two up to four days. When the battery is almost depleted (from 15%) the phone will alert you, but can you still use the phone for a while before it is actually completely empty. Regular recharge is simply necessary for these mobile phones.
HTC Hero memory
microSD memory card support
Quite a lot of memory is required for the HTC Hero, which features a 5.0 megapixel digital camera and an excellent music player. The standard internal memory is 288MB. The camera always requires a microSD card, without a memory card you're not able to shoot. A 2GB memory card is included in the HTC Hero package. This is reasonable, but also fills up very quickly. The HTC Hero supports microSD/SDHC memory cards up to 16GB, but we won't be surprised if it turns out a 32GB card is also supported.
