LG Viewty Smart review

LG GC900 cell phone menu

A t the bottom of each start screen, a bar is placed with a foursome shortcuts, to either select a number, open the phone book, go to messages or open the menu. The menu of the LG GC900 is divided into four main categories: Communication, Multimedia, Organizer, and Settings. Each category features a horizontal scroll bar with direct shortcuts to the corresponding functions. This approach from the main menu makes it a lot easier and means less clicking is required. The icons for each category can be structured to your own preference.

Digital camera function on the LG Viewty Smart

The expectations of the digital camera function of the Viewty Smart are extra high, since LG focuses primarily on this function. The camera application has to be activated by the shortcut on the side of the phone or via the main menu. Because the shortcut has to be pressed thoroughly; briefly touching it simply won’t do the trick, the application starts up very slowly and sometimes you have to give it a second try if the key was unintentionally not pressed long enough. After activation, a strip becomes visible on the right side, where you can switch between taking still images and the camcorder, among other things. Upon touching the screen, even more shortcuts appear for the photographic settings of the camera.

LG Viewty Smart intelligent shot mode

LG stands out from the masses by its Intelligent Shot mode (IS-mode). This functionality allows the phone to select the best setting in any situation, which is displayed graphically at the bottom of the screen. In practice, using this mode proves somewhat disappointing; it looks good, but it takes twice as long before a picture is actually captured in this mode. Furthermore, the difference with or without use of IS shooting mode is not always that clear. Despite the innovative techniques, I soon decided to set the camera back to the default auto setting. Even then, it takes a while before a picture is taken, and although it is significantly faster than the IS-mode, it would not hurt to speed up shooting.

LG mobile photography

D espite some minor flaws, the results are not bad; the pictures we took with the LG Viewty Smart are neat. Only when encountering subjects with an abundance of contrast, the LG Viewty finds it difficult to guarantee a decent exposure / image quality. Besides the aforementioned settings, there are more setting options that become available by touching the screen; concerning the flash, close-up shooting mode, brightness and 'other settings'. In 'other settings' a turntable is displayed which can be rotated in order to arrive at the correct settings. Here, you will find the shutter sound, effects, resolution and ISO values, among other things. The ISO values can be set from ISO 100 to 1600. This way, you are still able take reasonable pictures in bad light conditions. However, the high-ISO settings do show high noise levels. A LED flash is also available for some extra light, although the range is limited to about 50 centimeters; otherwise the effect is rather inadequate.
