On paper it looks cool; 12 Megapixels, but the question is, what good it actually does in practice. In fact, nothing, or at least we simply don't need this large amount. We’d like to see high-quality pixels introduced in combination with a high sensitivity image sensor. Such development and deployment is however yet to come. The camera industry is also aware of this, and we are witnessing a shifting focus from pixel amount to pixel quality. The new Canon PowerShot G11 is an example; it's the successor to the 14 megapixel G10, but with an image sensor of 'only' 10 Megapixels. However, the sensor itself ensures an improved sensitivity by the large pixel size, and thus a higher quality with significantly less image noise at high ISO.
