Google Android operating system

It is not only noticeable from the back of the phone displaying a text: 'with Google'; the applications in the menu also make it clear that this phone features the Google operating system. Google Maps, Gmail, Google Talk and YouTube are all available for the HTC Magic Android mobile phone. And of course, the large search machine Widget on the main screen.

HTC Magic Google Gmail & YouTube

As a Gmail user, this application came in very handy. During the test period, I was quickly alerted when new email messages came in, and the application is beautifully designed as well as simple to use. There were no problems in sending a picture through the applied email account or opening attachments. The YouTube application was also very easy, partly thanks to a fast internet connection which enabled clips to be played flawlessly.

Google Maps Streetview mode

Google Maps lets you find a location and, if wanted, provides directions on the screen. Not a full navigation system. That said, positioning is fast, at first it is quite broad but as more information becomes available about the location, it gradually gets more precise. You can view it by a blue circle around the position. The latest version of Google Maps, standard installed on the HTC Magic, also features a street view mode. If available, you can actually walk through the streets.

HTC Market for external software applications

Thanks to the support of external software for many types of operating systems, it makes it easier if this software is at hand. Apple does this with its App-Store, and the HTC Magic provides its own 'Market' which is pointed out in the phone's menu. There are many free applications to be found, as well as ones you have to pay for, ranging from obtaining financial information to playing games. Thanks to the HTC Market, it is possible to keep adding something new to your HTC Magic, and there will always be something to your liking, considering there is such a wide array of products on offer.

HTC Magic mobile phone memory

The internal memory of the HTC G2 features 192MB. You will be able to store all your multimedia files, since the memory can be expanded with a microSD/SDHC memory card. An 8GB memory card is standard included, so you can start enjoying your favorite music right away, and you can take numerous pictures. A mobile phone of this caliber does require some memory space to be able to get the most out of the phone.

HTC Magic mobile phone Standby time

According to the specifications, the included 3.7V 1340mAh Lithium Ion battery provides a maximum standby time of 420 hours and a talk-time of 7.5 hours. This is quite acceptable, although in practice, it will mean a standby time of around two days - just as many other similar smartphones - while using various functionalities such as Internet, music and digital camera. This is something that could be improved on current mobile phones; either by providing extra battery capacity, using less energy or a combination of both. The limited standby time in combination with extensive use does cause the battery to be depleted at an annoying moment.
