Samsung S8300 GPS

T he Samsung S8300 Tocco features an integrated GPS antenna. This GPS antenna can be used with the Google Maps application inside the phone, or to add a GPS Tag to a captured picture, which enables you to see afterwards exactly where the picture was taken. To be able to use the Google Maps application, you need an internet connection. The Samsung Tocco does not provide Wi-Fi which means you have to connect through a network at all times. I suggest you only use this if your phone plan includes an internet package. There is no possibility to install external software, which means you cannot use the full navigation software, just Google Maps as a city map with instructions.

Internal and external memory

Standard, the internal memory of the Samsung S8300 Tocco is only 60MB. Thanks to the 8 Megapixel camera, the digital camera alone produces 2MB pictures, so the memory will soon be too small. Luckily, the memory can be enhanced with a microSD/SDHC memory card. The Tocco handset comes standard with a memory card of 1GB; however, this Samsung mobile phone supports these memory cards up to a maximum of 16GB. It's a pity the memory card is placed behind the battery. This means you always have to turn the phone off before changing or placing a memory card, and you can't retrieve data quickly from the phone using a card reader.

Stand by time of the Samsung Tocco handset

According to the specifications, the included 3.7V 880mAh Lithium-Ion battery should last a maximum standby time of 350 hours and a maximum call time of 4 hours. Obviously, this is only the case in ideal circumstances; in practice you will have to recharge the battery quicker. During the testing period, the battery did not last longer than two days. I did use the camera a lot and I did make quite a few calls, but the standby time still disappointed me slightly. It does not show any benefits from the energy saving function of the AMOLED monitor.
