Creative Zen Mozaic review | MP3 player functions
Creative Zen Mozaic offers music, photo and video
Creative Zen video player
T he Creative Zen Mozaic media player features a decent video player. Although the 1.8 inch monitor is rather small to watch full movies or long videos, the monitor does provide a good view, which makes the video clear in all weather circumstances. Even in bright sunlight, you can still watch your video undisturbed. The sound can be played through the included earphones or the speaker. The sound quality depends on the video compression. I really enjoyed using the video player, despite the difficulties I encountered at times when trying to find the correct video compression. If you transfer movies with Creative's software, you won't run into any problems, since the Creative Centrale software automatically converts to your Creative Zen Mozaic. The video mode features several options to make watching a video more pleasant. You can adjust the brightness of the monitor, or change the reproduction of the video to landscape mode. The Creative Zen Mozaic supports the MP4 video format, Transcoded AVI files (Motion JPEG).

Displaying pictures on the Creative Zen Mozaic
If you like to take your photos along, the picture mode of the Creative Zen Mozaic is a good although not the best solution. Displaying pictures on the Creative Mozaic media player with its 1.8 inch monitor and a maximum resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, nearly always takes ages in order to display a picture. Once the photo has loaded, it has the same quality as on a computer screen, except for being smaller, of course. The MP3 player has a few options to correctly display the pictures, among which are a zoom function and a slide show. This slide show is a nicely designed option, and takes care of the long loading time, while you can set an interval of a maximum amount of seconds, which gives the player enough time to load every picture and display it correctly. You can also add background music to the slideshow. The speaker really adds to this and gives it a nice effect, and the pictures show to full advantage.

Speaker on the Creative MP3 player
This Creative Zen model also features a speaker, as mentioned before. The Zen Stone and the Zen Stone Plus managed to surprise me highly with their very clear sound coming through a tiny speaker. And again, the Creative Zen Mozaic speaker did the same. It has an even clearer sound coming from the speaker than its predecessors. It seems the speaker is further enhanced and has been made even more perfect, so that it never sounds shrill and unpleasant, which was at times the case with the Creative Zen Stone (Plus). The speaker of the Zen Mosaic does know how to get the right tones, among which the high ones. It is pleasant to listen to, and now and again it creates the feeling of listening to a full speaker set instead of just a tiny speaker on a media player. Only if you play a song with a lot of bass, you are reminded of the small speaker. The bass often has a crackle in it, which does not add to the song. It often happens that the Creative Zen Mozaic does not reproduce the bass sound well enough, in particular for genres like dance, trance, house, electro etc. which is rather annoying.

Creative Zen software
C reative Centrale is the software included with the Creative Mozaic. It will transfer all your files, pictures, videos and music from the PC to the Creative Zen Mozaic (or to all your Creative Zen products if you like). You can also connect the Zen Mozaic to your computer and manage it with Windows Explorer. This creates a separate icon in "This Computer" through which you can manage the Creative Zen without the need for additional software. Sometimes, this works even faster than the included software, while you can directly drag and drop your music from the pc to the Zen; the software requires adding files to the transfer list etc. I happily used the Windows Explorer frequently during the test period to transfer music and pictures. To transfer files, you may want to use the Creative Centrale software, while it provides the correct conversion straight away.
