Garmin Edge 705 menu
Menu classification of the Garmin GPS receiver
Although the dimensions are small, the Edge 705 offers a wealth of possibilities. Take the Menu button; upon pressing it, a modest list of 6 options appears: Settings, Where to?, Training, History, Save Location and Satellite. Many more steps follow one level down. That is why it is convenient that we can return to the main menu by pressing the Menu button once. The Mode button is used to scroll through the menus, to go one step backwards and the joystick to go one step further or to confirm. In general, you would start setting the Profiles. You can insert age, gender and weight, which is used to customize the training.
Garmin Edge sport possibilities
Sport training with the Garmin 705 HR
Personally I think these applications are Edge users’ main interest. The device allows for planning all types of trainings; intervals, stamina training, trainings at certain exertion levels. During workouts, a Virtual Partner can be displayed on the screen. With one glance at the display, you will be able to see whether you are ahead or behind the planned schedule, thanks to your Virtual Training Partner. The unit can be enhanced by a heart rate meter and the GSC-10 speed and cadence sensor by which so much information is available - you would have to be an expert on sports to fully understand it all. Even top sportsmen and women will not miss much.

Garmin Edge heart rate monitor
Garmin provides two optional accessories; the heart rate monitor and the Garmin GSC-10 speed and cadence sensor. These can be connected to the Edge wirelessly. It means that they need their own batteries, though. The heart rate meter comes with the Edge 705 HR standard package so I also tested this device. At first, there was a connection right away but my heart did not seem to beat. The manual tells you to moisten the sensors slightly although that could easily be changed to: wet the sensors. It wasn't until I was sweating all over that everything worked fine and accurately. I checked my heartbeat frequently with the old, familiar fingers-on-wrist method and did not find large deviations in heart rate.

Garmin GSC-10 speed and cadence sensor
If we want more information about our performance on the bicycle, we can purchase the GSC-10 speed and cadence sensor or an energy meter of a different brand. The Garmin website displays a list with compatible devices. The Edge works with the 2.4 GHz ANT + Sports technique which enables a wireless connection to several devices. A magnet can be attached to the pedal in order to calculate the cadence or the amount of pedal laps. By using another magnet, and setting the bicycle tire size, we can also measure the speed independently of the GPS signal. This way, we still obtain information about travelled distances during rides in wood or city environments.

Training programs on the Garmin Edge
One item in the Setting menu that will often be used by sportsmen or women, is Training. First, we find the Auto Timer Pause option here, offering the ability to leave out waiting times for traffic lights or other intervals. If we don't reach the preset speed, the time and distance measurement will automatically stop. Furthermore, there is the Auto Lap Trigger function. Through the GPS we can opt for measuring at a certain spot. We can also opt to measure at fixed distances for example every 10 kilometer. And there are 5 possible warnings available. We set a maximum and a minimum and the Edge will warn us if we are not within the margins of the planned cadence.
Garmin Edge virtual partner
Creating a workout on the Garmin Edge 705 HR
The Training menu also provides us with a Virtual Partner. If we have created a workout or set a certain route, we can activate this training buddy. The Garmin Edge 705 will then display two cyclists, the top one is the cyclist of the selected program, the bottom one shows your own performance. A nice and funny way to see if you are ahead, in pace or behind training schedule. For some people, this might just be the challenge they need to make a long training session more pleasant. The Workouts setting provides a wide range of options to set times, distances, and speeds, with or without intervals. Everything can also be linked to a certain training goal. Enough variation for all likings.
