Garmin 400t geocaching

A n application that will appeal strongly to the owners of the Garmin Oregon is treasure-hunting via GPS; Geocaching. It has been available for several years but has become easier to use on the latest Garmin models. You can already download the cache with basic information straight to your unit. If you become a Groundspeak Premium Member for $ 30.00 a year, you gain access to all the extras at Geocaching.com, Waymarking.com en Wherigo.com. I tried out a cache and I now understand why there are so many cache puzzles added as an extra challenge nowadays. The current devices do offer too much detailed information altogether. From a sporty viewpoint, you should only rely on the compass.

Wherigo cartridge

The Wherigo applications are also available on the Oregon. Maybe this requires a brief explanation. A Wherigo cartridge can contain several items. For example; pictures, sounds, descriptions and similar to a geocache; waypoints. The main difference is that we are not dealing with fixed data here, a cartridge responds to our motions. Our position is known through the GPS signal and matching information, assignments etc will appear from our location at that specific moment. However, we do lack the possibility to play the matching sounds. There are entire city guides available for download including an audible explanation.

Wherigo tutorial - Tips & Trucks

A standard Wherigo tutorial is available on the device, but to get to know these new kind of caches, we can also use the 'Ready built' cartridge. Upon starting the activation, 5 random waypoints are created around our position. You can select a level of difficulty to determine the distance between the points. They can land on quite unexpected places. Someone who started in Scheveningen, a beach town in the Netherlands, spotted one waypoint more than 40 meters into the North Sea. As for me, I just about stayed clear from private grounds. We call it a Play Anywhere cartridge, because the playfield depends on the start coordinates and can therefore be played anywhere.
