HTC Touch HD review | Phone Operation
HTC Touch HD operation
T he disadvantage of the touch keys is the fact they are not illuminated, and by night this turns out difficult at times, although after a while you will know which one is which. The volume buttons on the side also have a shortcoming; they offer more than one function. You can adjust the ringtone volume and you can activate the vibration mode without ringtone as well as the fully silent mode. This means only few actions are required if you wish to adjust these options, but it is at the same time annoying when you miss a call because the silent mode is activated without your knowledge, or if you hear a loud ringtone coming from your trouser pocket in the middle of a meeting. The keys remain operable even when the screen is locked and that is exactly the problem.

Windows Mobile menu
The menu structure of Windows Mobile is more than widely known by now; the start bar on top, and the choice of numerous shortcuts. As mentioned before; this works great with your fingers on the Touch HD. Even at Settings and Explorer the icons are big enough. The scroll bar requires the stylus pen for operation, however; sliding your finger across the screen on a random spot also enables scrolling.

HTC TouchFlo 3D interface
In addition to the standard menu structure, we also know HTC's TouchFlo 3D. This distinct interface enables access to the phone in a smoother and graphically improved way. I had the pleasure of working with TouchFlo 3D previously, through the HTC Diamond, although that was the first software version. I quite liked it but was convinced there should be more to it. The TouchFlo interface used to waver a lot which was rather annoying. As for the HTC Touch HD; the TouchFlo works so much better! Not yet without any wavering, but working with it is fine.

Menu of the HTC Touch HD
Windows Mobile is extremely good when it comes to synchronization, particularly for the corporate users. For private use, I find Windows Mobile slightly improved, although not everything works very smoothly at all times. Without the TouchFlo, the structure is slightly outdated, or at least, not innovative and the phone freezes a tad too often, for example when sending a text message. Generally speaking, this is not so often the case with alternative complex software.
HTC Touch HD internet
HSDPA internet support
The HTC Touch HD offers all thinkable options when it comes to the Internet. Thanks to HSDPA support and the availability of Wi-Fi you can connect in every which way you like; fast through the mobile network or at home via a wireless network connection. The wizard will quickly detect the available Wi-Fi networks, it's only the actual connecting that takes some time. To be able to surf the Internet, there are two browsers available. In addition to the Internet Explorer, the Opera browser is also standard installed, which we come across more often lately. Sometimes, the mobile phone finds it hard to display a full page that is not specifically designed for a mobile phone, but other than that, the Internet is generally very well accessible with the HTC Touch HD.
HTC Touch HD multimedia handset
Playing multimedia files
The HTC Touch HD is very good at playing multimedia files. The Windows Media Player enables playing of all file formats without a problem. For those who prefer a different media player; you can also install another player in a simple and easy way. Moreover, the TouchFlo offers the possibility to play music; you can scroll through the CD covers as it were, by sliding over them with your finger. Without activating a program first, you can play a song by a brief touch. The speaker of the HTC Touch HD lacks a few low tones which makes the sound rather shrill, especially with the volume turned up high. The headset that comes with the HTC is solid and sounds good. Furthermore, any headset with a 3.5mm jack can be connected on the top.
