3.2 Megapixel digital photo and video camera

The 3.2 megapixel digital photo and video camera on the Blackberry Storm is one of the device’s strong points. The pictures turn out surprisingly good. In particular, the colors and sharpness are extremely good. The pictures produce vivid colors. I tested the auto focus thoroughly by testing the depth of field. And with positive results; the lens focuses clearly on the right objects. Even at a macro level, the lens is able to differentiate between various objects and to display even the smallest detail.

Shutter lag and Speediness

I am less thrilled about the speed of the camera. It takes awhile before the camera is completely activated; almost 3 seconds. It then takes about 1 second to focus correctly whereas the delay from pressing the shutter to actually capturing the picture is about 2.5 seconds. This is certainly a disadvantage since the pictures made by the Blackberry Storm are of good quality. A flash supports this quality. It can be set to three modes: on, off or auto. If set to auto, the camera uses the environmental light to decide whether the picture to be captured needs more light.

The Storm's image stabilization provides pictures with minimal blur. The phone absorbs the constant jitter of your hand which obviously helps to take sharp pictures. A nice extra is the GeoTagging function. This feature allows you to 'label' a captured picture with the exact location it was taken thanks to the phone’s captured GPS data. You can visualize a map to go with your picture gallery.

White balance settings on the BlackBerry Storm

The last, but certainly not the least, option on the digital camera is the white balance setting. This mode can be customized to some six preprogrammed modes. They provide quite a full overview of the warmth range of the white balance. Five modes use a preset value: sunny, cloudy, night, incandescent and fluorescent. The sixth mode is auto mode. If set to auto, the camera quickly calculates the white balance right before the picture is taken.
