BlackBerry Storm review | Phone operation
BlackBerry Storm phone operation
Revolutionary BlackBerry touchscreen
The Blackberry Storm looks like a modern PDA and feels just as bulky and heavy. The large 3.3 in touchscreen is supported by 4 basic buttons on the front, 4 on the side and 2 on the top. The screen is revolutionary, even for a touchscreen. It's based on a new technique, called SurePress, which turns the entire screen into a large button. You have to literally press the screen after selecting an item with your finger.

Touchscreen operation
This new way of operating the touchscreen is revolutionary, but it also takes some getting used to, particularly when you have worked with other touchscreen phones. I have the impression the touchscreen is less precise, which often causes you to miss a button. Since the Storm doesn’t respond quickly, you spend half the time correcting mistakes made by pressing the wrong buttons.
BlackBerry Storm accelerator
Accelerator function on the BlackBerry phone
Like many other smartphones, the Blackberry Storm also features an accelerator. This preinstalled software enables the screen to automatically rotate when the device rotates. This is nice since it allows you to work in landscape as well as in portrait mode. SMS text messages, emailing and watching videos is better in landscape mode, whereas surfing the Internet, using the menu and calling is more pleasant in portrait mode. The disadvantage of the Blackberry's accelerator is that the screen rotates at the slightest motion of the phone. If the phone tilts sideways slightly, the screen rotates before you know it, and it seems that it takes a lot longer for it to rotate back to the original position. All these new techniques do not make it easier to operate the device.

BlackBerry Storm main menu
Pressing once on the screen leads you from the standby menu to the main menu. This clear and well-structured menu contains all the functions and applications of the Storm, supported by a description of the image. Simply scroll through the menu by sliding your finger over the screen. In addition to the main menu, a standby menu is available on the start screen of the Blackberry smartphone. It offers access to several frequently used functions and enables quicker access to your favorite application.
BlackBerry Storm menu
T he Blackberry Storm's menu looks very good; it's kept simple in black and white with a bit of color here and there to emphasize an image. The menu structure is quite logical compared to other phones. The two top rows display messages (SMS text messages and email), contacts, media and the Internet browser for quick access. Items like settings and deactivating the Blackberry are placed underneath the scroll menu. You don't need them very frequently and are still easy to locate. You would think this is a straightforward menu structure however; while working with the menu, I couldn't get over the feeling that the device does not do exactly what I want it to do. The phone freezes too often or executes the wrong command.
