Watching videos on the Sony Walkman
Sony NWZ-S639F video function
The monitor of the Sony S639F is crystal clear and displays videos in MP4 format excellently. The only disadvantage is the rather small size of the monitor, which means watching a video on the media player does not always prove pleasant. According to the specifications, it is possible to store 60 hours of video (at 384 kfps) on the 16GB of memory space. This is the same in practice. Besides standard options for video, like play/pause, whilst playing a video, it is also possible to adjust the clarity of the screen, go back to the start, adjust the zoom setting (full screen, auto or off) and to adjust the video orientation (vertical, horizontal right, horizontal left). The way videos are rendered in the menu can also be adjusted in the video options. If you upload a video from your pc to the Sony NWZ-S639F, it is visible in the menu with an icon saying 'new' which enables you to quickly find your new videos. And if you turn the MP3 player of in the middle of watching a movie, or if the media player fails suddenly, the picture will resume automatically after turning the player on again. In video mode you can always switch between the music last played and the video, and vice versa with pressing the button once.

The picture mode works almost similarly to the video mode. Pictures are reproduced on the screen of the S639F true-to-nature and very bright. The size of the screen does not matter so much for viewing pictures. A picture can be displayed vertically, horizontal left or horizontal right (picture orientation). At any moment, it is possible to adjust the brightness of the screen or to start a slideshow. All the pictures that are in one folder will be shown with an interval that can be set prior to starting the slideshow; long, normal or short. On top of that, you can select any picture to serve as background. It's an easy way to share your pictures with others and there are enough options to satisfy everybody.

T he extras of the Sony NWZ-S639 are: radio, audio book, podcast, SensMe Channels and Intelligent shuffle. The radio option of the media player allows you to manually or automatically search and store many radio stations. The scan sensitivity can be adjusted to high or low. The Sony S639F is also able to play audio books. It's easy to transfer the books from your pc to the Sony and you will be able to listen to your audio books everywhere and at all times. In addition to audio books, podcasts can also be played. Furthermore, the intelligent shuffle option of the Sony S639F is a nice extra. The 'Time Machine Shuffle' lets you select a year and will then play all the songs brought out in that specific year randomly. However, the SensMe is the nicest extra the NWZ-S639F offers. In this menu, with pressing the button once, all your music is sorted in 11 different channels, among which are Morning, Daytime, Night, Lounge, Acoustic, Electronic etc. It's funny to hear which music was sorted to which channel. In the morning, the MP3 player will play songs that guarantee an easy wake-up call, whilst at night music is played that lets you snooze off easily. Lounge, electronic, extreme etc. are quite obvious.

Memory capacity & Battery-life
The thin Sony NWZ-S639F has 16GB of memory. This is enough to store around 3200 songs or 60 hours of video. Although the memory is not expandable; 16GB should be enough for general use. It's still a nice surprise to see 16GB on a media player this thin. The battery-life of the Sony Media player is very decent. You can also use the MP4 player for a long time without a drastic decrease of battery-life. The S639F is equipped with a good battery indicator telling you when the battery is nearly empty, so that you will not run into any unpleasant surprises. A fully loaded battery lasts 40 hours, according the specifications, and this is according the use in practice too. Even if you scroll through the menu a lot, the battery-life doesn't drop drastically. Recharging is possible through the included USB cable and takes approximately thirty minutes. The battery is not exchangeable by the user.

Transferring files via USB
Transferring files is carried out through the included USB cable and is very fast. There are two ways to transfer your files: via synchronization or 'drag 'n drop'. Virtually every synchronization program works to transfer music; iTunes or Windows Media Player. It works fine, everything is carried out fast and the music is well-sorted on the Sony Walkman (most of the times even with the album cover). Yet there are users that don't like to synchronize and prefer to drag the music directly from the pc onto the media player with Windows Explorer. This is also possible with the Sony Walkman S639F, and also this way everything proves to get well-sorted on the Sony itself. Moreover, the included software, Sony Media Manager for Walkman, is also a nice way of sorting and transferring all your media files to the Sony S639F.
