T-Mobile G1 digital camera
Google Android G1 digital camera
Naturally, the Google Android Phone has an onboard digital photo camera. A 3.2 megapixel camera to be precise. However, the digital camera is one of the weak points of the mobile phone. Starting up the application takes forever and the shutter delay is rather dramatic too. Unfortunately, a flash function is lacking, which means picture-taking in the (near) dark is impossible. These cannot be called the most up-to-date functions. Fortunately, autofocus is available and from a relative viewpoint you will obtain sharper pictures. Features such as adjusting ISO values or shutter speed are not available for this simple digital camera. In general, it lets you make pictures in a decent quality, nice to take snapshots in between, however, it's certainly not a replacement for a digital compact camera.

All these applications on a big screen like this do have a downside. The battery of the T-Mobile G1 Android does not even last a day. For average use, in my case: around 20 minutes of calling, 10 SMS text messages, taking a few pictures, 60 minutes of music-listening, some surfing on the Internet and regular checking of emails. This means you have to recharge the battery several times a day. Luckily, a home charger as well as a USB charger is included, which enables you to recharge the device in the office too. However, you have to be aware of the fact that the battery has a limited lifespan. Personally, I don't like my phone to run out of energy and even less so when I am on the road. It is possible to save energy by disabling functions like WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth.

Finally, my findings on the media player. The device contains 1GB of internal memory, which is expandable by using a microSD card. The stereo headset is remarkable, while it is not a mini-jack, as I expected, but instead a mini-USB, just as the charger. Therefore, it is not possible to charge the device and listen to the music via the headset at the same time. Naturally, you can also use the speaker on the back of the G1 to listen to music. The sound is of very nice quality, although it decreases as soon as you put the phone on the table. Another disadvantage is the fact you cannot watch full-screen videos on the screen. However, the video quality is so good that it is acceptable. Watching a movie while travelling by train is a nice addition, although you have to be aware of the fact that your battery will run out of energy very quickly.
