Symbian operating system

Samsung opted for the Symbian operating system on the i8510 INNOV8. Although it is a familiar system, the i8510 has managed to keep its very own appearance. Naturally, the convenient and extensive menu structure is available. The main menu consists of twelve icons containing all the functions, even a shortcut to Google is standard available in the menu. Besides agenda, music player, radio and personalization, you can place up to six shortcuts on the main screen, ensuring all of your favorite functions are easily accessible. If you prefer a quiet background image and you don't like the shortcut menu, you can deactivate the active standby function. The menu works smoothly and is a joy to the eye when it comes to graphics. The advantage of Symbian is the possibility it offers to install external software and the amount of functions standard available. Sometimes, it does require some searching on your part, but in general the menu structure is quite user-friendly.

Playing DIVX-files

Everything concerning this subject has been gathered in the menu under the Media function. You will find Realplayer, voice recorder, gallery, radio and video editing software here. Realplayer is mainly meant for video files. Thanks to the availability of Realplayer on the Samsung i8510 INNOV8, it allows for playing DIVX format files. Support of this compact movie format enables you to view a movie or your favorite series on your phone whilst travelling. The common music player shows all content sorted by artist, song title or album, according to your own wishes. The built-in speakers, two in this case, offer a nice sound. If you'd rather use a headset, the standard included headset is very pleasant to use, just like with the Omnia. The headset fits perfectly and offers an excellent experience of listing to music or video files. If you prefer to use your own headset, this is not a problem for the Samsung i8510 INNOV8, as it has a 3.5 mm headset jack on the left side to connect any headset without adapter.

Samsung i8510 Internet

Wi-Fi en HSDPA support

The integrated web browser works fine when surfing the Internet. Also thanks to the connection possibilities through WiFi and HSDPA and, of course, the large screen. A touchscreen is not available, but thanks to the optical joystick, it is ever so easy to scroll through a web page. The optical joystick is the small black button in between the arrow buttons. If you slide your finger over it, you can scroll through the menu or operate the mouse cursor in the web browser. I have come across the joystick before, but it has never worked as well as it does on the i8510.

Business card reader function

The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 is indeed very complete. It standard offers a number of nice and graphically well designed games such as Fifa 2008 and Asphalt 3 and, in addition, a CNN application is available too. The latter shows news items per subject and keeps you updated while on the road. For corporate users, there is a business card reader available in addition to Office support. The phone takes a picture of the business card and the data is managed to be added as a contact at a later stage if required.
