Keyboard & User friendliness

The sliding full QWERTY keyboard makes using text messages and email a lot more interesting on the Sony Ericsson X1. It’s easy to operate the keys and whilst sliding open the keyboard, the monitor will automatically tilt. The phone will also bend slightly upon opening the keyboard which makes it fit more comfortably in your hand. The disadvantage of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 keyboard is that it does not offer any tactile feedback. If you prefer working with the stylus pen, you can also display a keyboard on the touchscreen. Furthermore, an optical joystick is available, this is the button in between the arrow buttons. If you touch it with your finger, you can scroll with it. This is easy for an Internet page or in a large list, however, in the menu you will quickly scroll past the item you want to select.

Built-in GPS receiver

The Sony Ericsson X1 handset features an integrated GPS receiver. There is no navigation software standard included, only a three month trial version of Wayfinder, however, if software is installed, the Xperia can be used as a useful navigation system. The mobile phone offers A-GPS or Assisted GPS, which means that a faster location decision is made thanks to the phone network. This is possible because the mobile phone connects to a mast. Some data traffic is used in order to enable this fast location fix, so make sure Internet is included in your contract!

Sony Ericsson X1 panels

I n general, using stylus pens is the easiest way to use Windows Mobile, since the icons are rather small. Many new mobile phones already offer an additional interface with shortcuts like the Touch-Flow of HTC. As for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, the menu is already simplified by the so-called panels. This is a dynamic start screen, offering a lot of information. The panels can be changed by a button on the bottom of the mobile phone. There are a standard number of panels available, like Google, multimedia and some kind of dashboard. On this dashboard, shortcuts are found with access to programs, agenda items, RSS feeds and function buttons to change settings. Sony Ericsson offers developers the possibility to add panels. Recently, a Facebook panel was introduced for fast viewing and uploading of pictures. The new panels can be downloaded through the mobile phone.
