Archos music player
Playing music via the Archos media player
The music browser of the Archos 405 is neat, well-structured and well carried out. If you click on music in the main menu, a list will appear giving you a choice between: Artist, Album, Title, Genre, Year, Rating, Play list and Browse on the hard drive. This is quite a list with selection options, which facilitates finding your favourite music. There is no separate search function available, however, this is not a real minus, since you generally will not need a separate search function. If you click further in this menu, you will see a list with Artist, Album, Genre etcetera. The monitor displays the information about the song you’re listening to, the previous, next song and the switch lets you switch back to the list with the overview.
Archos MP3 player
Archos Media Player quality
The Media Player features an external speaker, so once you have found the song, you can share it with others or listen to it yourself via the included earplugs. The latter are standard earplugs, no surplus luxury to these; the sound is accordingly. The earplugs don't have a high quality feel to them and the sound is at times even bad, however, the earplugs do fit nicely in your ears and you can connect other earplugs to the Archos 405 as well. You can deactivate the MP3 player at any time and restart playing the music at a later moment without a problem. The supporting music formats are the following: MP3 (up to 320 Kb/s) CBR/VBR, WMA, WAV and protected WMA/WAV. In addition, software plug-ins that enable playing AAC and AC3 format files are also available on the Archos site.
Archos video player
Playing videos via the Archos media player
You would already want to purchase this device for its video player alone. The video functionality is perfectly carried out and the 30GB of memory capacity lets you store more than enough videos and movies. The videos are displayed in the menu as a list with a tiny motion image to the left side, (a selection of the full movie), with text addition. Once you start a video you can enjoy high quality video reproduction. A number of options become available when playing a video; for example format, speed or settings for sound/reproduction can be adjusted. The sound through the external speaker is yet again not too pleasant, however, the earplugs make you enjoy watching a movie on the Archos 405.

Good quality Archos video player
I even get the feeling the Archos 405 is bidding on its video player. The buttons on the side let you search through a video with ease. You can look for a certain chapter, slowly winding or taking huge steps through the movie. Furthermore, it is possible to pause the movie or even deactivate it during watching, and restart it at a later time. As I already mentioned; the monitor is extremely clear and comfortable to look at. Only when you watch it from an angle down below, the monitor will turn black and the picture becomes almost invisible. From all other angles it is perfect.
Archos photo viewer
T he photo viewer works almost the same as the video player and is also carried out well. All your pictures are displayed in a clear overview with files and single pictures, just as you see them on your pc. You can search by date, which makes navigating easy and the pictures will appear on the monitor fast and bright. There are more options available to reproduce the picture in the best possible way: Turn, Format and Slide show at which you can set picture lag and transition. As Archos claim: "A nice way to share your pictures with the world". AudioCorder is a fancy name for voice recording, since this is what it is meant for. It is not advisable to record songs this way while the quality is just not good enough to do so. A voice memo or voice recording however, can be made without a problem and the file the device makes can easily be retrieved and listened to. Time and date are stored neatly and everything is carefully registered.
The Archos also enables opening and viewing of PDF files, although maybe not with the possibilities Adobe viewer offers.
