Samsung Serenata touchscreen

TFT touch screen on the Samsung F310

The square TFT touchscreen of the Samsung Serenata supports 262,141 colors. Its resolution of 240 x 240 pixels doesn't make it a huge screen compared to the entire device; it takes up about half the total space of the mobile phone. The touchscreen can be used in combination with the navigation dial, while you won't be able to carry out all the actions by just using the screen. There are some fixed pressing points, namely the quick buttons at the bottom of the screen and the numeric keyboard in the center of the screen. Top right and left, the pressure points are found to gain access to the menus 'Music' and 'More'. More actions such as sending text messages, scrolling through the menu or dialling a phone number, require using the navigation dial. Therefore, it is a context sensitive screen and not a full touchscreen screen.

Samsung Serenata operation

Operating system of the Samsung Serenata

In spite of the exceptional operating system of the Samsung Serenata, dealing with the device is not complicated at all thanks to its intuitive user interface. The centre button of the navigation dial offers access to the menu and functions as confirmation button. The other four points of the dial indicated on the metal housing of the phone, serve as backspace, C-button and to answer or end a call. Turning the dial allows for scrolling through the menu or selecting the correct numbers or letters when calling or sending text messages. I must admit that writing text messages is slightly slower this way than the usual operation. Furthermore, there are some quick access links on the touchscreen allowing access to three options of your own choice. The 'Music' pressure point brings you to all your music files and play lists that can be listened to with the Audio function of the Samsung Serenata. To prevent pocket calling and wasting battery life by unintended playing of music, you can activate the keylock by pressing the backspace a bit longer than you usually would.

Menu options & Quick buttons

The menus of the Samsung Serenata F310 are fairly basic. It's not that you will find anything lacking, but you might not be entirely surprised by it either. The main menu holds a list with various options, such as; messages, browser, organizer, library, phone list, call management, extras and settings. Nothing can be changed when it comes to the interface of the menu, in fact there are only a few factors that can be changed to the monitor, namely; brightness, light, dim settings and some standby mode options. You can use the 'More' pressure point at all times to obtain additional menu options or details. When you press the 'More' point from standby mode, it brings you to a quick menu which offers direct access to various options such as voice mail, flight mode and Bluetooth. You can also decide here which quick buttons you want to dedicate to the quick buttons of the pressure point on the touchscreen. You can choose from 24 different options. The menu is perhaps somewhat abbreviated and its graphics aren’t too flashy, however, it does suit the neat and effective style of the Samsung Serenata.

Samsung Serenata MP3 player

Samsung Serenata MP3 player

An MP3-player with phone function

Naturally, the main function of the Samsung Serenata is the MP3 player in combination with a high quality speaker. Thanks to the advanced ICEpower sound technology of Bang & Olufsen, the Serenata is not only a cell phone with MP3 function, but also an MP3 player with phone function. Samsung and Bang & Olufsen did fulfil their promises; slide up the speaker, press 'Music' and get a nice surprise by the clear, powerful and impressive sound. It's hard to comprehend that this sound is produced by a cell phone. The navigation dial lets you adjust the volume at which a red circle appears that opens and closes depending on the volume's setting. The sound quality remains perfect, no matter what the volume is. The functions and settings of the MP3 player are fairly enhanced. You can create playlists, activate bass boost, repeat or send songs. The sound quality when using earplugs depends for a great deal on the quality of your own earplugs. In addition, you have the standard included Samsung Bluetooth headset at your disposal, however, personally I prefer two earplugs instead of a headset.
