TrackBall navigation

To adjust the volume, the choice of the songs, and starting or stopping a song, you have to use the TrackBall. As mentioned before, the TrackBall does not always works that well, and it might happen that you open the next song where you only wanted to increase volume of the song playing. The built-in speaker is of good quality and is able to produce reasonably loud music.

Play video files

Video files can be played on full screen. Thanks to the large size of the monitor, it is very pleasant to watch a video on the Samsung i550. The nice thing about this Samsung is that it allows playing Flash files, a feature I frequently miss on other mobile phones.

Built-in GPS receiver

The Samsung i550 can also be used as a navigation system, thanks to the built-in GPS receiver in combination with the included Mobile Navigator 6 software of Navigon. The version that is included however, is a trial version that can only be used for free during two weeks, after which you can continue to use it with limited functionalities or decide to purchase the full version. And again when using the GPS receiver, the large screen comes in handy.

Samsung PC Studio software

Samsung includes the famous PC Studio software with the i550. Samsung PC Studio can be used for various actions and looks slightly different than usual. The 'synchronizing' function is ever so handy to synchronize contacts, agenda items, notes and email messages with Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes. This function is particularly convenient for the business user. Furthermore, Samsung's PC Studio allows you to make back-ups, install applications and of course to transfer files.

Microsoft Office Viewer

The possibility to view a number of text files or presentation is also available on the Samsung i550. There is an integrated viewer for Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe PDF files. The only disadvantage is that it does not allow for editing, although it lets you check the minutes of a meeting or a roster.

Samsung i550 memory

microSD / SDHC memory

The standard internal memory of the Samsung i550 counts 150MB. The memory can be enhanced with a microSD/SDHC memory card, though. A 1GB memory card is included, however; it contains navigation software taking up some 100MB of the card. If a larger memory card is purchased, it is possible to transfer the navigation software to that card. And if you do care for a larger card, the Samsung i550 supports up to a maximum capacity of 12GB.

Samsung i550 battery

Lithium Ion battery

The battery that Samsung has included with the i-550 is a 3.7V, 1200 mAh Lithium Ion model. According to the specifications, this battery should offer a maximum standby time of 360 hours and a maximum talk-time of 8 hours. In practice, it turned out I had to recharge the cell phone once every two to three days which is standard and certainly not annoying when using it averagely. However, if you use the i-550 for more than 2 hours of music-listening and navigation, the battery obviously won't last that long.
