Samsung Soul review | Multimedia features
Samsung Soul menu
T he menu of the Samsung U900 is exactly as we know it from recent Samsung phones. Only the graphics have been improved and made more beautiful. A nice option the Samsung U900 offers is adjustment of the menu by means of a personal theme. It allows you to adjust virtually everything, from the colour of the icons on the menu to the background colour in the main menu.
Surfing the Internet with your cell phone
HSDPA internet connection
The Samsung U900 features HSDPA. This technique enables faster Internet. The Internet browser works very well, the only thing lacking for entering a URL or a search field, is a full QWERTY keyboard. You also have to tell the menu that you want to insert a new URL, which is not handy, because it doesn't let you enter an Internet page very fast. The recently visited Internet pages are only found in the history. If you go to an Internet page you have visited before, you have to fill out the entire Internet address again. Yet for a cell phone this size, the Samsung U900 still lets you surf the Internet swiftly. It offers the user the possibility of searching news items and other information everywhere and always. Pictures made with the Samsung U900 can be uploaded immediately through a special application and with the aid of an Internet connection. For example, it lets you upload pictures to Hyves or Flickr.
Multimedia features on the Samsung Soul
MP3 & Video player
Naturally, the Samsung U900 features an MP3 and video player. Several file formats are being supported and videos can be played on full screen. The Media player is quite standard. The built-in speaker, with reasonable volume and quality, as well as the included headset let you enjoy your music and videos. Upon viewing the pictures made with the Samsung U900, you will notice their large size since it takes a while before a picture is fully rendered. This is annoying because sometimes you just want to scroll through the pictures quickly and that is not possible with the Samsung U900.
Samsung U900 battery
3.7 V, 880mAh Lithium-Ion battery
According to the specifications, the Samsung U900 offers a standby time of 407 hours and a talk-time of over 6 hours with the included 3.7 V, 880mAh Lithium-Ion battery. If, however, the cell phone is not used frequently, the battery will last extremely long. However, as soon as intensive use is made of all the options the Samsung U900 offers, the battery could be dead in one day. For average use a standby time of approximately three days is possible.
Samsung U900 memory
microSD / microSDHC memory
The internal memory of the Samsung U900 counts up to 100MB. The 5.0 Megapixel digital camera takes pictures with a size of around 2MB. This means the internal memory does not suffice to hold all your holiday pictures. Thanks to the possibility of enhancing the memory with microSD / microSDHC memory cards, however, you will have sufficient memory capacity at your disposal to fully use the extensive application possibilities the Samsung U900 offers.
Samsung U900 software
Samsung PC Studio software
Samsung offers the well-known Samsung PC Studio together with the Samsung U900. This allows you to manage the files on your cellular, make backups from messages and agenda items, and send messages. If you want to copy files to and fro the computer through the software, it happens rather slowly. It's better to select 'mass storage' in the menu of the Samsung. The U900 then works as USB stick, which offers faster data transfer.
