Samsung Soul review

T he mobile telephony market is a dynamic market. At a high rate, developments are made. The various players in the market adapt quickly to this and ensure that there are not many differences between mobile phones as far as specifications and certain segments are concerned. Yet it is clear that the user-friendliness gradually comes to play a more important role. The menu structures are becoming more and more similar and techniques to enhance the user's ease are being applied. The Magical Touchscreen of the Samsung U900 is a fine example of this technique. At an earlier stage, LG introduced a similar function on the KF600. Unlike the LG phone, the Samsung U900 is equipped with several common buttons besides the small touchscreen that serve for example to answer or end a call.

First impression of the Samsung U900 phone

The stylish Samsung U900 Soul comes in a neat package mainly showing the most important new function: the Magical Touch. In addition, you will find in the package a battery charger, a headset, a data cable, several manuals and a small software CD-rom. The front of the Samsung U900 is neatly designed and the buttons next to the screen as well as the back cover feature an aluminium look, which gives this cell phone a solid appearance. Personally, I would have preferred this cell phone to have the aluminium colour all over, as the black back underneath the cover does stand out a bit much. Furthermore, the handset has a rather large size, certainly when it is slid open, due to three extra buttons in addition to the common numeric buttons. The thickness of the phone, on the other hand, has turned out better, and this makes it a nicely manageable phone.

Magical Touch of the Samsung Soul

As mentioned before, the U900 is Samsung's first device with an intelligent menu structure, or as Samsung call it: the Magical Touch. This 'thinking along' structure shows in a foursome of icons that change when a different menu-functionality is chosen. Standard four icons are visible, which can be arranged to the user's preference, as quick access buttons. Samsung's Magical Touch works easy and fast, even when you press the arrow buttons a number of times sequentially. Upon making a choice, you can feel the cellular vibrate slightly. Animations visible on the screen make it a lively and inventive creation.
