Sony Ericsson W380 menu structure

The menu of the Sony Ericsson W380i is not that innovative. The design of the interface depends on the theme that is selected, however, the menu structure is almost identical to that of the Sony Ericsson that has been out for a couple of years now, like the Z610i. Even when the Walkman theme is set, the icons in the main menu have remained untouched. This comes to your advantage if you have worked with a Sony Ericsson before, however, the eye has its claims too. The only way to have some variation in the menu interface is to adjust the theme. To give you a brief impression of the menu structure if you have never worked with a Sony Ericsson before: the centre navigation button or the right selection button give access to the main menu, where you have 12 different sub menus at your disposal, such as; messages, con-tacts, files, camera, organizer and settings. The main menu does not display the time with every theme whilst the sub menus do.

Walkman music navigation

On the front side of the Sony Ericsson W380i, three music buttons are placed in the form of elevated tips. If you deactivate lock with the dedicated button on the back, you can press play / stop to start the music player or the radio. The back and forward buttons let you scroll through the music list or radio frequencies, without having to open up the clamshell phone. Each time, you will feel a small vibration and the buttons will light up as a confirmation signal. This gives you the confirmation you have pressed a button, since at first glance you would not expect these buttons to actually be what they are. Not only are the Walkman music buttons handy; they also form a nice addition to the design of the Sony Ericsson W380i.

The Sony Ericsson W380i Walkman phone is all about music. An important component is the Walkman player, selectable through the menu. You can choose from a black, orange or white theme; all three different interfaces of the player are equally neat. Moreover, the structure of the setting menu is extremely intuitive. Select a song from your music library, press play or use the music buttons on the front of the phone to scroll through your music list. Or you can let yourself be pleasantly surprised if you select the shuffle function, or select a play list made by yourself containing all your favourite songs.

Mega Bass

At first I was not so impressed by the Walkman player, since the speaker of the Sony Ericsson W380i produces a shrill sound. Trying to alter that through adjusting the equalizer did not change much. However, if you connect the headset to the device, you will absolutely enjoy what you hear, also the integrated Mega Bass shows to better advantage when heard through the headset. Nowadays, newer Sony Ericsson earphones have been further developed and will support the Mega Bass even better. They can be connected to the W380i without a problem. Even though the possibilities of the Walkman player are not that enhanced, and even if the quality of the speaker could have been better, the beautiful operation buttons on the cover of the device, the im-pressive Mega Bass and the neat Walkman interface have convinced me after all.

FM-radio & Track ID

The Sony Ericsson W380i features an FM radio that can be used when the headset is connected while the latter serves as antenna. Find a radio station with the aid of the left and right navigation button or with the music buttons on the front side of the clamshell phone. The name of the station, the song and other available information is displayed on the monitor with RDS. Favourite stations can be stored in a list. Are you really curious as to the title of a song you're listening to? You can use Track ID to record part of the song, and the corresponding title will be searched for in a database and sent to you.
