Multimedia functions

Apple has become more famous over the last few years thanks to the birth of the iPods. These portable music players are Apple's success story. The Apple iPhone is also available without call function as the iPod Touch. This makes it obvious that the iPhone phone is also very useful as a multimedia device.

In the iPod function of the Apple iPhone all audio and video files are joined. It allows you to search on artist and on song title. Upon opening a music file it starts to play. The built-in speaker is not of the best quality. Certainly the low tones give away the bad sound quality. When using the headset, this is not an issue.

If you turn the iPhone whilst navigating through various songs or artists, you will find yourself in the so-called 'Cover Flow' mode. This mode displays every CD cover that is stored in the phone. Upon moving your finger over the covers, you will get a look inside. Clicking on a cover it will turn around and show you the entire track list of the CD. This ensures it's ever so simple to find your songs.

Surfing on the Internet

In order to enable surfing on the Internet with the Apple iPhone, the Safari web browser is used. A quick access button for this is found at the bottom of the menu. When you open Safari, you will see the address bar on the top side. Clicking this will make a full QWERTY keyboard appear on the touchscreen monitor. Besides inserting an internet address you can also enter a search in the field below. If a search order is given, you will enter Google. A handy option to search for things quickly.

A web page appears on the screen fully-sized. Zooming in is enabled by placing two fingers on the screen at the same time and moving them away from each other, just as when you zoom in on a picture. This makes nearly every Internet page easy to read and clearly visible. The iPhone unfortunately does not support flash which is integrated in a growing amount of Internet pages nowadays. Internet pages with flash are therefore not completely displayed.

The Apple iPhone we tested doesn't feature UMTS, unfortunately. Therefore it is only possible to surf the Internet using GPRS. This slows down surfing somewhat, nevertheless, to do a quick search it is fine and the speed suffices. Furthermore the iPhone features Wi-Fi which enables quick access to the Internet through a wireless connection at home, and lately on the road too. It works both fast and easy, whilst ensuring data traffic costs are saved.

Bluetooth functionality

The Apple iPhone has Bluetooth at its disposal but not all the functionalities as we known from other mobile phones are supported. And since iTunes is used to manage music and video files, it is not possible to transfer them to a second device through Bluetooth. Using Bluetooth on the iPhone for car kits or headsets is possible, speech only so to say.

Built-in battery

The battery is integrated in the iPhone and cannot be replaced because of this. When the phone is fully loaded and with average use, the battery lasts around three days. If you use the Internet function frequently or the various other iPod functionalities by making a picture now and then, the mobile phone should be recharged every day. Personally, I found it no problem and the standby time was very acceptable.

8GB Internal memory

The iPhone's internal memory tallies 8GB. That goes for the version we were testing, there is already a version available with 16GB of memory capacity. It's not possible to enhance the memory. In comparison with other mobile phones not even supporting 8GB memory cards, the amount will easily suffice.

iTunes multimedia software

I n order to put music files, video files and pictures on the iPhone, you have to use iTunes. iTunes is Apple's multimedia program. It is easy, certainly for people that have been using an iPod for a while. However; there are some disadvantages to this program. You are forced to use one and the same computer to manage your music. That is because all the files from iTunes are copied. If you connect to a different computer, all the files on the iPhone at that moment, will be replaced by the files of the concerning computer. And not many file formats of video files are accepted in iTunes. This is annoying; it prevents you from placing all the videos directly on your iPhone. There are various programs available though, to convert video files to the MPEG-4 format that is supported by iTunes too.
