Megapixel camera phones
E very new generation of phones comes with several new features. These features are mainly based on a software solution. Take for example face detection; an intelligent feature that enables recognizing faces, focuses precisely etc. The software solution is often limited to what it can accomplish; slower in calculations and not capable of recognizing large numbers of faces, or unable to carry out other complicated calculations. If the current camera platform is replaced by a faster successor, currently being developed by Ericsson among others, it will be possible to base many features on the hardware. At the same time, the resolution will undoubtedly increase. I predict that the first high resolution cameraphones will be announced at the earliest during the upcoming IFA (29 August - 3 September 2008, Berlin, Germany) and perhaps the following Photokina (23 - 28 September 2008, Cologne, also in Germany) will be the perfect time for several manufacturers to announce 8 Megapixels and higher amounts of Megapixels.
The first quarter of 2009 is expected to be the start of the introduction of 10-12 Megapixel cameraphones.

Samsung G810 - 5 Megapixel digital camera
Focussing with a mobile phone remains slower compared to the traditional digital camera. It takes around 2 seconds before the object is well-focussed; the shutter release lag, however, is not too disturbing. If you are used to shooting with a compact camera, you might be wondering how the zoom button works. You have to operate it with your left hand, a hand that is usually not so active when photographing. If you want to capture an action moment quickly, and the Samsung G810 is not in camera mode yet, you have to count on more than four seconds start-up time. You also have to remember that patience is a virtue when you adjust something in the "Setting" mode of the menu; it takes more than three seconds before the change is carried out. Mobile action photography is still a future feature!

Samsung G810 - 3x optical zoom lens
The 3x optical zoom lens of the Samsung G810 is a handy feature compared to the cameraphones equipped with the digital version. The optical zoom keeps the image quality high and uses the full effective image resolution. The zoom lens enables precise zooming in 8 stops which is standard accompanied by a lot of noise. I haven't been able to find the option to shut down the noise, although it is possible to turn off the shutter sound. The speed of zooming in requires improvement. You have to count on approximately three seconds to zoom from wide angle to telephoto and vice versa.
Samsung camera settings
T he camera mode of the Samsung SGH-G810 features a well-organized menu that is easy to operate. Various features such as image stabilization and face detection are available on this cameraphone. The stabilization is an electronic version, offering the only support so far to take pictures in difficult circumstances. It is not the most ideal solution, since the ISO sensitivity simply gets increased, to keep the shutter speed fast enough, so that it corrects jitter for handheld pictures. It would be better if Samsung offered the possibility to store personal settings. Right now, if you activate the dynamic range and the stabilization, leave camera mode and activate it at a later time, you have to set both options again, whereas the activating of the digital zoom and, for example, the exposure mode do get stored and recalled.
