Mobile phone operation
T he Levi's mobile phone has subtle operating buttons at its disposal lighting up red when using them. On the right side of the device a quick button is found for using the camera thus preventing you from having to dive into the menu and missing the shooting moment. To the left the volume buttons are positioned for use during playing music or during a call. The key-lock function is automatically activated. Pressing the star button longer than usual will let you set the time span after which key-lock gets activated.

Pressing the left selector button, you find yourself in the main menu. Two different styles are available for rendering the main menu. 'Matrix, a 3x3 division of icons or 'Page' at which icons are rendered sequentially when pressing the button to the right of the navigation key. Personally I found the matrix style the most convenient. The nine icons offer access to the phone book, messages, calling history, settings, multimedia, fun, tools, services and file management. Time and battery status are only rendered in standby mode, which is inconvenient at times. For example when you are writing a text message and you want to know what time it is. In addition the menus are straightforward and well-structured although Levi's could have paid more attention to the graphics. There is no possibility of setting themes or colour schemes for instance and the icons in the main menu look a lot alike.

The Levi's mobile phone has been equipped with a 2 Megapixel digital camera with LED flash and a 4x digital zoom. Taking close-up pictures is rather difficult and in badly lit circumstances the pictures don't turn out completely sharp. I discovered that due to the rainy weather during the week I was testing the Levi's cell phone's camera. The camera performs better capturing cityscapes, landscapes and friends, for example on the beach. It is a bit of a puzzle as to which settings achieve the best results. Light sensitivity can be adjusted on the spot without having to go into the option menu. And also white balance and eventually night mode can be set. Still the curves are never completely steady. Besides that you have to keep in mind that the resolution's default settings are 220x176. Picture settings lets you select from the following sizes: 220x176, 640x480, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200. Pressing the centre navigation button lets you immediately send a picture through MMS or Email. Image Viewer, found in the Multimedia menu, shows thumbnails of the pictures with date and size. I must admit that the quality of the camera disappointed me somewhat, but if you haven't got a digital camera at hand in certain circumstances and if you don’t expect state-of-art pictures, the Levi's mobile phone's camera is a reasonable alternative.

Levi's photo-editor software
Photo-editor offers a surprising lot of picture editing possibilities for a mobile phone. Besides carrying out some simple adjustments, such as sharpness and contrast, one can also play with tone, saturation and even colour. You can add text and pictograms to a picture and last but not least, Photo-editor offers many standard effects such as greyscale, sepia and water paint. The best way of viewing and editing pictures is a computer monitor of course, but the Levi's Photo-editor is a nice enhanced addition.

The audio player of the Levi's cell phone is practical and uncomplicated. You can make playlists to have all your favourite songs at hand. The navigation buttons let you operate the player. It might be a personal matter but something that I miss here is the option of listening to parts of a song or skip a piece within a song. The audio player does not offer the function of rewinding or fast forwarding within a song. The speaker as well as the headset produces a beautiful sound. It is also possible to record sound with the audio recorder. You can choose from three formats: AWB, AMR and WAV.

So far I never got round to purchase a normal alarm clock and I fully depend on the alarm function on my cell phone. The Levi's mobile phone offers setting no less than five simultaneous wake-up times. Unfortunately it is not possible to set the sound that you want to be woken up with. Besides the alarm, the tools menu also offers a calculator, calendar, to-do list and other functions to manage your businesses.
