Philips GoGear Sound

Philips GoGear Sound

Philips Go Gear Sound quality

You can listen to the sound of the Philips GoGear media player through the integrated speakers as well as through the included earplugs. The sound coming from the integrated speakers is not of a very high quality and specifically when the volume is turned up. When the headset is connected, the sound quality improves significantly and also the volume range improves. I do like the fact that it is possible to listen to the music without a headset even though it makes the quality drop. The quality of the pictures is just as fine and of the same high quality as the video quality. The size of the monitor suffices to watch a movie without being annoyed by too small a monitor.

Philips GoGear Menu

Philips GoGear Menu

Philips GoGear media player

The main menu of the GoGear media player consists of some seven submenus; Videos, Pictures, Music, Radio, Recordings, Settings and Last played. With every single submenu an animation appears for help and explanation. The navigation buttons let you scroll fast and easily through the entire menu. The menu button on the front of the Philips GoGear SA6185 ensures easy return to the main menu. The 'Settings' menu offers the possibility to set date and time as screen safety and also lets you adjust as to how long they should be visible. Furthermore, a battery indicator bar appears top right in every menu.

The included 'Media converter for Philips' software lets you convert AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD (*.VOB), QuickTime MOV, WMV and RM formats to the WMV9 format that is supported by the Philips GoGear media player. When video playback is turned on, the GoGear SA6185 will switch to full screen after approximately three seconds. Touching any button will make a bar appear that indicates how long this video has been playing and the total playtime of the video. Moreover when touching any button, top right the battery indicator bar will appear with next to that on the left side the name of the movie that is playing.

Philips GoGear Photos

The Philips media player SA6185 comes with some five lifestyle pictures. These pictures are of a very high quality just like my own pictures. The media player will swap to full screen when watching pictures just as it does when playing videos. The pictures can be turned by keeping the navigation buttons pressed down for about one second. A nice additional function is the possibility to view the pictures in a slideshow. In the 'Setting' menu you can set the time that a picture stays on the monitor. A disadvantage of this menu is the amount of time the Philips GoGear takes to load the thumbnails.

The 'Music' menu lets you select songs through Artist, Album or Genre. 'Playlists' can also be made and the 'Play list' button lets you play these lists fast and with ease. You can also choose to view all the songs in a list. When playing music on the monitor you will see which song is playing, how long it takes and how long it has been playing as well as the artist name and the album name. Again time and date are visible on top.

Philips FM Radio

Tuner range of the Philips GoGear media player is FM. When listening to the radio, the earplugs have to be connected because they function as an antenna. You can also listen to the radio through the integrated speakers by adjusting the radio in the radio menu. A maximum of twenty preset channels can be set and the Philips GoGear can also find them automatically. When listening to the radio, the frequency and the preset channel are visible. The sound quality of the radio channels is clear and bright.

Voice recording

Built-in mono microphone

The built-in mono microphone lets you record audio through the 'Recordings' menu. You can choose from recording a voice recording, listen to a voice recording or delete it. When you record a voice recording, bottom right on the screen you will see how much recording time is left. The maximum recording time is five hours. The name of the voice recording will be the date and 001, followed by 002, 003 etcetera. The name can be adjusted manually afterwards. The sound quality of the voice recording through the built-in mono microphone is fine and clear.
