Samsung G800 Mobile phone - Digital camera

P ictures can be made with the use of the five Megapixel auto focus digital camera. The camera offers an auto focus assist lamp, a xenon flash, face detection and image stabilization. We can say without exaggerating, that the Samsung G800’s camera is currently the most advanced camera inside a mobile phone. The possibility to zoom in three times optically enhances the photographic possibilities. This way distant objects can be captured without any quality loss. This is a true advantage compared to the competitors with digital zoom. The buttons for zooming in and out are placed on the left of the shutter release button. Every time you press the button one step zooming in or out is established. If it is too dark to focus correctly, the auto focus assist light will come in handy. The red light will shortly expose the object which gives the camera the opportunity to focus correctly. The flash of the Samsung SGH-G800 has a limited effective range. That is one of the reasons for making it hard to shoot in bad light circumstances.

Samsung G800 - Shutter lag

Problems trying to capture moving objects will soon occur. For example objects like playing children, a running dog or a sports event. We notice the same phenomenon on the Samsung G800 as we see on other cell phone cameras; shutter lag. And it is this what makes the difference on a real compact camera where shutter lag hardly exists nowadays. The Samsung G800 has been equipped with an electronic image stabilizer. The software speeds up the shutter speed and increases the ISO value which makes the camera more light sensitive. A disadvantage of the higher ISO is the appearance of higher noise values.

Samsung G800 Face detection

The camera of the Samsung G800 has been equipped with face detection. When this function is activated, the camera will recognize faces. The additional selection box around the face will indicate the camera recognized the face. Sometimes face detection takes quite a while to find a face. This delay probably occurs because face detection is carried out by software instead of hardware. On most compact cameras face detection is processed by hardware or in any case further developed and therefore a lot faster. The Samsung G800 is in fact the first mobile phone equipped with such an innovative function. Face detection in a cell phone is still so very new and will undoubtedly get further developed. Samsung has taken the first step by integrating this functionality in the SGH-G800 camera phone.

In order to shoot excellent pictures the light circumstances are of great importance also for the Samsung G800. When you are taking outdoor pictures with the sun shining brightly, you won’t encounter any problems. When light circumstances are worsening, for example shooting indoors, you will notice blur due to jitter. You can partially prevent this blur from happening by activating the image stabilizer, but that will cause higher noise values.

The Samsung SGH-G800 offers many setting possibilities. For example the possibility to adjust settings like white balance, file size, macro mode and picture quality. Also functions like Multi-shot mode and self-timer are available. Negative, Sepia, Black&White, Antique and Watercolour can be selected in the effects menu. Samsung’s digital compact cameras already offer settings to automatically retouch red eyes. Unfortunately this function is not found in the Samsung SGH G800 yet. The Samsung SGH-G800 does offer some photographic modes though such as landscape, portrait and macro mode.
