Price of Smartphones

A lthough you'd expect sales numbers of the luxurious devices to decrease due to the disappearance of the bonuses providers were offering, which enabled consumers to purchase an expensive cell phone for a cheap price, the opposite is occurring according to Moons. "Now that these bonuses have stopped to exist and the consumer has to pay the full price, he thoroughly considers his purchase and weighs every pro and con before obtaining the smartphone that best fits his desires. This results in the purchase of a smartphone offering more possibilities and the consumer has no problem with paying a bit more for it." Mark Moons informed us that the prices of smartphones will even go up in 2008 but that he is not expecting this to influence the consumer or business user in their purchase of a smartphone. Moons: "We are planning to put even more emphasis on design and extra functionality when develop-ing these devices in the coming time."

HTC Smartphone development

"In 2008 HTC will put some more time into enhancing the ease of use of the devices in order to enable offering increasingly more possibilities. For us, 2008 will be the year of the interface and we will do everything possible to enhance the ease of use of our smartphones. More frequently we will choose to equip them with touch screens and movement sensors." HP recently informed us the amount of users preferring a touch screen is similar to the amount of users preferring a QWERTY keyboard. Usually this also depends on the application. The perfect solution would be to offer both possibilities!

Paul Wilkens of Samsung differs from opinion with Mark Moons of HTC as far as the consumer's choices are concerned. "We find a growing number of consumers wanting to use more than one device. And we find that many choose to use a different cell phone for weekends and normal working days when it is used for various purposes. Therefore we believe that there is in fact room for a 'fusion-segment'. It concerns the light and easy cell phones that differ from consumer phones by their messaging functionality. The user is then able to hit the road in his spare time without having to take along his usually large business phone. One example of a handset that fits in this segment is the Samsung i620. A sexy slider phone available in white and pink, with Windows Mobile as operating system and push email. A device with an appealing design that the consumer doesn't mind being spotted with.

Conclusion : Smartphone or regular cell phone?

Conclusion : Smartphone or regular cell phone?

W e do admit that it can be more convenient to have a light and compact cell phone at your disposal in weekends and during holidays. A cell phone that looks attractive on top of it. The question is: wouldn't you lack the functions missing on that phone, which you do have at your disposal during the week? Even during a holiday it is ideal to read your email quickly and to be able to answer to it. Of course many cell phones offer this functionality too but to actually use it is a lot less comfortable. It also depends on whether you are a user going for design or for a smartphone offering many possibilities. And for the indecisive ones among us; you can always go for a fusion device such as Paul Wilkens mentioned. Manufacturers are clearly trying to make the smartphone as attractive as possible to the consumer. And sometimes you have to give and take a little as a consumer, for example, settle for a smaller monitor so the device is not a heavy load on your inside pocket during weekends.
