Samsung YP-K5 review | Introduction
W e already know that Samsung's designers know how to make an attractive device, but thanks to the Samsung K5 that came out quite recently we again acknowledge the designers' skill. At first, this modern MP3 player looks like an ordinary MP3 player, but if you take a closer look, you will see that it has no buttons. A quick look at the products they are currently launching is enough to tell us that Samsung is on the up and up. They know how to strike the right balance between style and elegance, user friendliness and innovation, to give products just that little extra. All this, is of course, a matter of personal taste. After the MP3 player had been fully charged and turned on, I got a pleasant surprise in the form of Madonna's new CD on the Samsung YP-K5. I was able to try using the Samsung K5 for a while and you can read about how innovative this MP3 player really is in the following Samsung K5 review.
Slider design
Samsung K5 - Slider design
One of the first things you notice when playing with the Samsung YP-K5, is that the MP3 player slides open via the so-called slider system that you also come across in phones. The Samsung's slider doesn't just open upwards like most mobile phones, but to the side. Now, many of you will be thinking "why does a MP3 player need to slide open"?, but Samsung thought it was a good place to conceal a speaker. The speaker has a beautiful silver cover, and when the Samsung K5 MP3 player is slid open, the loud speakers folds out upwards, which means that you can set the Samsung K5 down and operate it easily. The speaker doesn't need to be turned on via the menu, but is activated when you slide it open.
Sound quality speaker
Samsung K5 - Sound quality speaker
At first, you will think that a speaker this size will not be able to offer much in the way of volume or quality, but it's actually pretty good for a speaker of this format. The Madonna CD that had already been installed came out of the speaker in amazingly good quality. There was no sound distortion even at the highest volume. I decided to try out other music and dug out a good trance CD from my collection, saved it to MP3 and put it on the MP3 player. After listening for a while, I decided to turn the music up full. I then heard some sound distortion and the heavy bass tones sounded a bit creaky coming out of the small speaker. Samsung, however, has a solution for this, but more about that later.
Sound quality Headphone

After I had subjected the speaker to the first test, it was time to check out the headphones that came with the Samsung. Time for Madonna again. The headphone's super sound quality came as a pleasant surprise. Thanks to the shape of the headphones there is little or no irritating noise from the surroundings. The shape is something you will have to get used to, because it really shuts off your ears. Both the headphones and my ear drums were subjected once more to the volume test. The sound remained good right up to the maximum volume, and there was little or no perceptible sound distortion. After listening to a trance number, I noticed that the heavy base sound was once more causing distortion and crackling in the headphones, but so little as to be negligible.
OLED Display
Samsung YP-K5 - OLED Display
The Samsung YP K5 is not really a compact MP3 player, but does have a lot to offer, including an OLED display of 1.71 inches, or 4.34 centimeters. The advantage of an OLED display is that you can always see what's happening on the screen, whether you look at it from the side, above or beneath. The quality of the screen used by Samsung is good. Everything is shown clearly and you will have no problems recognizing anything on the screen from photos to menu settings. The bars of the equalizer that sometimes move up and down quickly are clear and attractive. I wonder why Samsung has not added a video player to an MP3 player with a screen of this quality. That in combination with the speaker would make it great for watching a film underway, but maybe this is in the plans for the follow up to the Samsung YP-K5
