Samsung SGH-D900 review | Camera
3.0 Megapixel camera
Like nearly every mobile phone nowadays, the Samsung SGH-D900 has a digital camera. The camera in the Samsung D900 has a resolution of 3.0 Megapixels. If you want to use the digital camera, you must first slide the Samsung SGH-D900 open, then the camera lens on the back of the phone appears. The camera is activated with a press of the camera button on the right side of the phone. It takes a little while before the camera is turned on, so if you need to capture someone smiling spontaneously, it is handy if the camera is ready to start. A delay in starting up the camera is still pretty normal. The camera does not yet have a super speed image processor, the buffer is limited and the internal memory has an average processing speed.
Size and quality
With the Samsung D900, you can choose different settings concerning the quality and size of the pictures. You can choose between fine, normal and super high for quality settings. The difference between these settings can be clearly seen in the quality of the photos. If you use the normal quality, the photo is fairly grainy. All the graininess disappears if you use the super high quality. You can set the size of the pixels from 240 x 180 to 2048 x 1536 pixels. All in all, the combination of high quality and the size of the photos give great results.
Auto focus
Samsung D900 - Macro
The digital camera in the Samsung SGH-D900 has an auto focus and a macro function. Most cameras currently fitted in mobile phones do not yet have auto focus, never mind a macro function. After the shutter release has been pressed, the camera focuses and the selection square turns green. After the auto focus has had time to focus, it takes a moment before the photo is taken and recorded in the memory. As I said earlier, it takes a long time for the camera to start up. This in combination with the time needed to focus and record photos makes it difficult to photograph quick moving subjects.
Flash lamp
Samsung D900 - Flash
The Samsung D900 has a small flash lamp that can be activated via the menu. The flash has 4 settings options: off, automatic, only when taking photos and permanent. If you select the only with photos setting, the Samsung D900 will use the flash each time you take a photo, while permanent ensures that the flash is always on, even before you take a photo. This can be very handy if you want to use the auto focus in poor light. The effective reach of the flash lamp is limited to a distance of 1.5 to 2 meters it where it works well. You shouldn't expect miracles of the flash lamp, but it is handy, for example if you want to take a picture in twilight of someone sitting within effective reach of your flash
ISO settings
Samsung D900 - ISO
With the Samsung D900 you can set the ISO value at Automatic, 100, 200 and 400 ISO. If we look at these values, we see that at ISO 100, the result in regard to noise ratio in the photos is reasonable, but if we set the camera at 200 ISO and 400 ISO, the noise ratio is so large that the photos are practically useless. Maybe you will be less disappointed when you consider the noise ratio of photos that are made at high ISO values with an ordinary digital camera. This will certainly remain to be the case with digital cameras in mobile phones for a while, seeing that the image sensors would need to be considerably smaller. Several manufacturers are working hard on improving this negative feature so that you can also take noise free or low noise photos with digital cameras in mobile phones.
