S amsung is producing an increasing number of mobile phones under the name "Ultra Edition". They include the Ultra Edition 6.9, the Ultra Edition 9.9 and now the Ultra Edition 12.9. We also know the Ultra Edition 12.9 as the Samsung SGH-D900, a model from the already successful D-series. When the D500 was launched at the end of 2004, everyone was impressed by the model. It was narrow, compact and a little bit on the thick side, but equipped with a 1.3 Megapixel camera that was great for taking a snapshot every now and again. The hype around mobile phones that you could slide open had begun. One manufacturer after the other began to produce phones that you could slide open, instead of the then usual flap that you had to open up. Now, the Samsung D900 has arrived. It's not really a phone that stands out immediately. The Samsung SGH-D900 is not extremely compact, but is certainly a phone that a lot of people will enjoy using. When we received the Samsung SGH-D900, I used it a lot while testing it. You can read our findings in the following Samsung SGH-D900 review.

Samsung SGH-D900 - Design

Because Samsung wants to be number one in the field of technology, they have a reputation to hold high and to ensure that they keep coming up with innovative features. The outside of the Samsung D900 is not very striking. If it is folded up, it is just a black mobile with quite a large screen. The back has a sort of rubber layer, which makes it feels really good in your hand. The rubber layer gives you a good grip on the phone and another advantage is if the D900 is on a slightly sloping surface, it will not roll off immediately. When you slide it open, you can see the number keys. They are a good size and easy to operate for people with big hands.

Samsung SGH-D900 - Menu

As with every Samsung phone, the Samsung D900's menu is simple to operate. Even if this is your first Samsung, you will be able to find your way around this menu in no time. It is even easier if you have already had a Samsung phone as everything is practically in the same place. The Samsung D900 only differs by a slightly different structure in the menu or by a different colour of icon. Navigating through the menu is done with the function key on the front of the phone. You can confirm a function with the confirmation key in the middle of the function key.
