Nokia and Elisa announced that they will carry out a pilot of Nokia's new N-Gage mobile gaming service. The pilot will start in February 2007 and run until mid 2007. "The core of the Nokia games strategy is to make it easy for people to find, buy and play great quality mobile games and we're excited to expand our relationship with Elisa to help make this possible," said Jaakko Kaidesoja, Director, Games, Multimedia, Nokia. "This pilot will help us further refine the N-Gage experience for our launch later this year." "Our goal is to give our customers a new and unique experience they cannot get anywhere else," said Mikko Mattinen, Head of Department, Consumer Customers Products, Elisa Corporation.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., is sampling 4.8-inch and 7.0-inch WSVGA mobile displays this quarter that specifically target the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) and mobile internet device (MID) categories. The products are being exhibited in the Mobile Internet Community exhibition area at the Intel Developers Forum on April 17 and 18. The 4.8-inch display is well suited for wireless broadband internet and portable navigation systems marketed to consumers. On the other hand, the 7.0-inch panel has been developed for use in vertical UMPC markets targeting children’s education, as well as for mobile professionals using a variety of PC applications and e-mail.

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, and a further 10 mobile operators have thrown their weight behind a GSM Association initiative to enable the worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at retail outlets. KPN, Maxis Communications Bhd, mobilkom austria, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, SKT, Vodafone and Wind have joined the 14 mobile operators that initiated the project in February. The handset vendors in the programme include Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which both plan to participate in the first trials scheduled to begin in October. Leading payment card company MasterCard is also participating in the initiative.

Describing the trends in mobile computing at the Intel Developer Forum, Intel executives said that personalization and content are key drivers behind increased demand for notebook PCs and mobile Internet devices. “The Internet is one of the driving forces in today's PC market and there is a desire for the Internet to be mobile,” said David Perlmutter, Intel senior vice president and general manager, Mobility Group. “Intel is serving the market today with notebook PCs, and will expand its reach by adding WiMax to notebooks as well as small form factor MIDs.” Perlmutter continued by discussing the importance of high-performance processors to enable users to have mobile internet access.

Research and Markets has announced the addition of WiFi for Voice: Consumer Research Around Wi-Fi Phones to their offering. Could a WiFi-Only phone ever Replace your cellular phone? No or Maybe was the lukewarm response from survey respondents that participated in our Web survey around Wi-Fi phones and communication devices. Although the majority of respondents expressed at least an overall lukewarm interest in WiFi Only phones, nearly twenty-five percent expressed absolutely no interest. Respondents cited WiFi's limited range and possible Quality-of-Service (QoS) issues as major obstacles to WiFi's use as a voice communication technology, over cellular.

iStockphoto, the world’s most visited stock imagery and video site, has selected Amuse Entertainment Group B.V. to take its stock photography images into the mobile sector. The pilot phase of the program will be launched in the UK and will allow mobile users to download wallpapers from a selection of 5,000 of iStockphoto’s quality images. Images will be found within a dedicated mobile storefront accessed through the iStockphoto website, and marketed and promoted jointly by iStock and Amuse. Images will be made available to UK mobile phone subscribers on the 3, Orange, O2, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone networks, and will be delivered via mBlox, the world’s largest mobile transaction network.

DivX, Inc. announced the Beta release of DivX Stage6, the company’s high-quality video platform that lets anyone upload, download, view, share and experience everything from short clips captured on mobile phones all the way up to full-length, high-definition feature films. Originally launched as an experimental “alpha” site, Stage6 has grown steadily in users and content creators since it went live in August 2006. The evolution to the beta stage signifies a more robust site with a completely new look and feel and significantly more features for both filmmakers and users.
