With the launch of its first 8GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card, Sony RME (Recording Media & Energy) has pushed up the current 4GB maximum capacity by 100%. To put this in context, upgrading a Sony Ericsson mobile phone with the new 8 GB M2 memory card will give customers a choice of over 5,000 fine quality 5 megapixel photos, over 2000 MP3 songs (4min per song at 128kbps), or over 88 hours of high quality MPEG 4 video (at 192kbps).

Giving photo enthusiasts the freedom to take more digital pictures and shoot more video, SanDisk Corporation increased both capacities and speeds in its SanDisk Ultra II flash memory line with the introduction of 32- and 16-gigabyte (GB) SDHC cards and an 8GB SDHC Plus flash memory card. The new SanDisk flash memory cards offer faster read and write speeds of 15 megabytes per second2 (15MB/sec), up from previous speeds of 10MB/sec read and 9MB/sec write in the SanDisk Ultra II line.

More capacity and fast transfer speeds are the chief benefits of the SanDisk Extreme III 8GB SDHC flash memory card, which was introduced by SanDisk. This and other imaging products from SanDisk will be displayed in Booth 1808 at PhotoPlus 2007 International Conference & Expo, which opens Thursday at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The 8GB SanDisk Extreme III SDHC card can store more than 4,000 high-resolution photos or up to 16 hours of MPEG 4 video. Revenue from shipments of removable memory cards for handsets is expected to be over $7 billion in 2007, compared with $5 billion expected from headset shipments including both Bluetooth and wired headsets, according to a recent study from ABI Research. Memory cards will continue to be the highest revenue-generating mobile phone accessory category over the next five years. ABI Research industry analyst Shailendra Pandey says, “With few exceptions, memory cards for handsets are bought by users separately from the handset purchase, whereas an increasing number of headsets are now being supplied inbox with the handsets.”
