A remarkable development in Smartphones is the running trend to go smaller. Smaller smartphones, with smaller displays. Although that is a broad concept, because a 3.2-inch format display is still not less than average for a modern smartphone. In any case, there was reason enough for HTC to come up with the HTC HD mini smartphone. It is a new Windows Mobile smartphone with a more compact design and with a more modest format display of 3.2 inches. In comparison with the high-end smartphones with a 4.3-inch format, it makes quite a difference. During the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Spain we took a moment to have a closer look at the new HTC HD mini Smartphone.

HTC HD mini quick review

Although the HTC HD mini mobile phone is not yet available in the retail stores, it is actually already a fact that the Windows 6.5.3 operating system will not make it to the end of the year. During the MWC 2010, Windows Mobile 7 was officially announced worldwide, with the announcement that a new series of Windows Mobile 7 Smartphones are expected to be delivered in the third quarter. According to unconfirmed reports, the HTC HD mini will not be able to benefit from an software upgrade, as the hardware does not fulfill Microsoft's requirements for the use of Windows Mobile 7.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the HTC HD mini Smartphone will be automatically considered ‘old' or useless. On the contrary, the first quick impression that we had of this new HTC smartphone is that the user interface appears to be very pleasant and clearly organized. At first glance it seems that this interface has been developed just a bit further in comparison with its big brother. The HTC HD mini handset reacts fast and its GPS navigation is precise.

HTC HD mini features

Whoever has already worked with the HTC HD cell phone will have experienced that there are many similarities, but in a smaller format. The small format of the HTC HD mini phone does not say anything about the specifications, which are not lesser than the non-mini smartphones, for that matter. Think about GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an FM radio, a 5 Megapixel digital camera with LED flash, and the fast Qualcomm 600Mhz processor.

Industrial design handset

Unsurprisingly, the design of the HTC HD mini mobile phone looks fine, but that is not what we came for. We had been told that it would have a sort of industrial design... Taking off the back of the HTC HD mini, we see what they are aiming at. The battery as well as the body of the phone has been painted with a remarkable yellow color. Only.... Why the inside?! We surely aren't the only ones that noticed that...
