G PS handheld devices provide the rambler with a lot of useful information. Also in the field of geo-caching, a number of interesting developments have taken place over the last few years. One of the applications of such devices is auto navigation. When I was asked to review the Garmin Nüvi 1240, one of the easiest car navigation models available, I expected to be done fairly quickly. However, this seemingly simple navigation system proves to have a lot more to offer, in order to make traveling to unknown destinations a lot easier.

Garmin car navigation review - Nüvi 1240 screen

The Garmin Nüvi 1240 is not considered large, yet the monitor measures 9 cm, which is still larger than my Garmin GPSmap 60, which has served me fine so far. The screen resolution of 320x240 pixels is generally sharp. When it comes to the Photo album, I would like more sharpness, although this also depends on the picture quality. When entering text, the smaller screen proves to be a disadvantage. Consequentially, the touch buttons are also smaller, which means you have to aim well with your finger. Also, if we want to check a road map, the devices with larger screens are clearly in favor, but for these, you do pay a few extra bucks. For me, the size of the LCD is not a problem.

Garmin Nuvi review - User friendly navigation system

The Garmin Nüvi 1240 is extremely user-friendly. At a local barbecue, I asked several neighbors to take a look at the Nüvi. I also searched for newbies. The simple design and clear menu structure enabled them to instantly find their way on the device. For people that have never really gotten used to the computer era, it is not so obvious that choices have to be confirmed. Instead of pressing the OK or Done button, they often selected the Return button, assuming their choice would be automatically confirmed. This error is quite easy to correct, however, as well as easy to remember and learn from, so that after 5 to 10 minutes everyone was able to carry out the basic instructions pretty smoothly.

Garmin Nuvi car navigation review

This time, I am not examining an enhanced GPS device, but the Garmin Nüvi 1240, a compact car navigation system. The Nüvi 1240 has some nice extras to offer. For example, if you want to practice 'The New Driving', you can select: 'Challenge economical driving'. On the basis of speed, acceleration and braking, a score is determined that shows just how responsible your driving is. The following Garmin Nüvi car navigation review will reveal all the possibilities of this navigation device.
