Smartphones to occupy 22% of Mobile Market in 2008
In the latest report titled Mobile Device Market Trends in 2008, the author has identified 5 hot topics that will emerge in the global mobile market. Competition in mobile operating system (OS) and platform segment will intensify and the influence of Mobile Linux will increase in the market during 2008, says Jeong Ho Yoon, senior consultant at ROA Group. In addition, smartphones will strengthen their position, occupying 22% of the entire mobile market and will help increase web-based services on the mobile network. The report also predicts that the User Interface (UI) will become more sophisticated, and it is adopted as a strategy to differentiate mobile handset and services in order to increase user demands. Therefore, handset vendors are expected to pursue mergers with UI companies while introducing a variety of new UI technologies. The use of the touch screen display will spread in 2008 as well, and it will rise as a handset standard after camera module. As the fifth topic, the author has identified the growth in GPS enabled handsets, and GPS handset-based Location Based Service (LBS) is likely to emerge as the new killer application.

Major players in the Asian mobile device market
The author projects that in the Korean and Japanese markets, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Sharp continue to be aggressive players in the handset vendor segment. Among the major mobile operators in the advanced markets of Korea and Japan, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, SK Telecom and KTF will take the lead in the device market of the two countries. Furthermore, the author forecasts that the market trends of Korea and Japan, where the operators push ahead with their globalization strategies, will resemble more and more the general trends in the world market.
