O n Mother’s Day, most adults may not be with their mothers, according to the new T-Mobile Mother’s Day Survey on how families stick together. “Today, many grown children do not live within driving distance of their moms,” said David Beigie, vice president of Marketing, T-Mobile USA. “Many move to other parts of the country. And dispersed families don’t come together for Mother’s Day like they do for other holidays such as Thanksgiving.” The survey found that about half of adults (49 percent) said they would not be spending Mother’s Day with their mother and another 18 percent were uncertain. 33 percent said they will be spending Mother’s Day with their mother.

Mothers day

The reasons why adults would not be spending Mother's Day with Mom, 40 percent said they did not live near their mother. Of those who do live near Mom, 10 percent either would be spending the day with their own families or their mother-in-law, or they had other plans. Eight percent said they do not recognize Mother's Day as a significant holiday. "The fact is, on Mother's Day many mothers won't be with their children on this special day," Beigie said. "So gifting becomes a main way for children - especially grown children - to share their love and stay connected with Mom." About two-thirds of adults (66 percent) said the best way to say "I love you" on Mother's Day is with a phone call. A card was a good option for 62 percent and 52 percent said flowers.

Mothers day - Flowers

Mothers with cell phones are increasingly interested in recent pictures of their children versus traditional flowers on Mother's Day. When asked, 25 percent of mothers who have cell phones say that if they cannot spend Mother's Day with their children they would like a recent picture of a loved one; the same percent who would like flowers on their special day (25 percent). On Mother's Day 2006, T-Mobile saw a 28 percent increase in the number of picture messages sent compared with all other days that month. In the T-Mobile Mother's Day Survey, more than half of all adults (52 percent) say they keep pictures of people on their cell phone and 75 percent of adults surveyed between the ages of 18 and 34 keep pictures of people on their cell phones.

Mothers day - Stick together day

"If a grown son or daughter can't be with Mom on Mother's Day, sending a picture message of what they're up to that day is becoming an increasingly popular option," Beigie said. "At T-Mobile, we're working to make picture sharing and text messaging much easier with our new myFaves service that makes it much simpler to send greetings over your cell phone to those who matter most." To help bring people closer to their moms, T-Mobile USA is announcing that this Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13, T-Mobile customers can send and receive unlimited picture, video, IM and text messages. The new "Stick Together Day" promotion provides T-Mobile subscribers with a simple way to stay connected to those who matter most - in this case, Mom.
