Wiesbaden spa house

Wiesbaden is the capital of Hesse, one of Germany's Lands (the term means Federal State). It has a long history as a spa house - the healing powers of its thermal springs were known as early as the Roman times. The first spa house in the city was built by architect Christian Zais in 1810, with Greek-inspired porticos and columns. While it was a marvel of architecture, the building was relatively modest, and could hardly accommodate the continuously increasing number of visitors. A larger, more modern spa house was needed, so the old building was demolished, and a new one's building has commenced in the early 1900s. Designed by architect Friedrich von Thiersch, the new Kurhaus was the "most beautiful spa building in the world", as Kaiser Wilhelm II, who funded the constructions, said at its opening ceremony. The building was expanded several times since then, but it retained its unmatched beauty.

The center of the city life

Today the Kurhaus Wiesbaden is a massive recreation center, with concert halls, conference rooms, ballrooms, and the Wiesbaden Casino housed under its roof. If you visit it, make sure to see the "Muschelsaal" (Shell Hall), decorated with Art Nouveau frescoes, the building's 21 meter high dome, which houses one of the largest organs of the area, with 48 registers and over 3,000 pipes. The Wiesbaden Casino offers gamblers a complete range of modern games, surrounded by amazing decorations from the past. Be sure to visit, and try your luck at its tables - if you don't know how to play, the online casinos canada guide will help you learn the basics. The Wiesbaden Casino is considered one of the most luxurious and beautiful gambling houses of the world, with no modern day building being a match for it.

Fields of green

The Kurpark, surrounding the Kurhaus, is a vast area of green, perfect for relaxation, walks, or even open-air events, was conceived in the mid-1800s. It was built in the style of an English landscape garden, with magnolias, azaleas, and swamp cypress. It has a large pond, where visitors can rent boats, to row to its artificial island, or around its six meter tall fountain. The Kurpark has hosted several major musical events - like theĀ  Rheingau Musik Festival in 2007, or Sting's gig in 2004.
