D espite big advances in recording and playing capability on mobile phones, too many service-imposed barriers are retarding the uptake of music videos and audio, says the mobile content website. The Voeveo web site is the first website to create an interactive community for creators and buyers of mobile content to trade on-line. The site's solutions architect, Jeff Mitchell, said mobile phone technology was still running ahead of service provider competence on a global basis. "What this means is that mobile users continue to be starved of content choice, plus they are paying too much for low-grade offerings," he said.

"Music format and device barriers erected in recent years need breaking down, so that consumers can access a growing range of high quality music video content. "For this to happen, producers and buyers of mobile content have to know where they can connect and trade in a secure and transparent manner. "Few easily accessible and functional markets exist for this purpose."

Jeff said a British band's recent success relied on downloads by mobile phone users to help propel one of its singles into the UK top 40 charts. "This is an isolated example, but it shows what can be achieved when digital music and videos are offered for sale via wireless media. "Clearly there is scope for growth in this form of mobile content, as long as digital rights and distribution are handled competently by a third party in an open marketplace."

He said the Voeveo web site offers digital rights management (DRM) copyright protection for producer sales, thus preventing content being copied or on- sold. "We have also adopted a patented technology giving buyers and sellers device matching capability, another step in breaking down artificial restraints for mobile consumers."
